Tomorrow morning, Staten Islanders can join Non-Profit Staten Island’s Community Climate Corps to learn more about hurricane preparedness, as hurricane season rolls in for this year. Readers may remember our coverage, including videos of historic flooding, all over the island. Here we discussed a hurricane rescue in New York City by a Fox News reporter who noticed a stranded woman in her car. It seems that, in the last several years, every time there is a storm, it is almost always incredibly strong and brings a ridiculous amount of water with it. Where in the past, seeing a wall of water instead of a subway staircase entrance was unheard of, now it has become routine. Whereas in the past, homes on Staten Island rarely flooded, now they flood with every storm. So these types of resilience training are more important than ever. It seems that 2012, which was when the first real historic hurricane, Hurricane Sandy, roared through the New York City area, there is another near-Sandy level storm almost every year. Homes are flooded and destroyed, and entire communities have to rebuild again and again. See below for the video from the NYC DEP, which provided some explanations as to why the storm and sewer systems have been unprepared for these changes.

Nonprofit Staten Island’s Community Climate Corps to Host Free Family Preparedness Fair at P.S. 56 This Saturday
Staten Island households are invited to get ready for hurricane season with trusted local partners, free starter go-bag supplies, kid-friendly activities, and practical emergency preparedness guidance
STATEN ISLAND, NY — Nonprofit Staten Island’s Community Climate Corps will host a free, family-friendly Community Preparedness Fair this Saturday, May 30, from 11:00 AM to 2:00 PM at P.S. 56, located at 250 Kramer Avenue in Staten Island.
Presented in partnership with the American Red Cross in Greater New York, Con Edison, NYC Emergency Management, and P.S. 56, the event is designed to help Staten Island households prepare for hurricane season, build confidence, and connect with trusted local resources before an emergency happens.
The Community Preparedness Fair will offer practical guidance on flood safety, evacuation planning, emergency communication, and household preparedness. Presentations will begin around 11:45 AM, with resource tables, food, light refreshments, and kid-friendly preparedness activities available throughout the event.
Families will also be invited to take part in a hands-on “Pack Your Bag” activity, where households can learn what to include in an emergency go-bag and leave with free starter supplies.
The Community Preparedness Fair is free and open to the public. Registration is encouraged to help organizers plan for materials, food, and family activities.
“This event is about making preparedness feel practical and doable for families,” said Rob Grosso, Program Manager for Nonprofit Staten Island’s Community Climate Corps. “You don’t need to have everything figured out to get started. Spending part of one Saturday with us can help your household understand what to pack, where to get reliable information, and what steps to take before hurricane season.”
The event will also help families become more familiar with P.S. 56 as one of the City’s designated emergency evacuation sites. While the event will not simulate an evacuation center activation, organizers hope that seeing the space, hearing from trusted partners, and understanding basic emergency guidance will help residents feel more prepared before a crisis occurs.
Nonprofit Staten Island’s Community Climate Corps works with residents, community organizations, and public partners to make climate preparedness more accessible and locally grounded. The initiative builds on the work of the Staten Island Community Organizations Active in Disaster coalition, known as SI COAD, which brings local organizations together to support emergency preparedness, response, and long-term community resilience.
