Fireworks on Both NYC Rivers: What NYC Pet Owners / Dog, Cat Companions Need to Know Before July 4

Staten Islander News sat down with Dr. Wasi Ashraf from VEG ER for Pets in Brooklyn to talk about ways companion animals such as dogs, cats, parrots, hamsters, and others can be prepared for the Fourth of July holiday celebrations.  While these events can be exciting and fun for humans, usually they are too overwhelming for our companion animal friends to enjoy.  Make sure your dogs’ or cats’ collar tags are up-to-date and properly affixed to their collars before the holiday, and don’t take them with you to firework-heavy events.  Understand that your animal friend is unlikely to enjoy it, even if they aren’t overtly or normally terrified.  It is still too  much for them, and they would certainly enjoy being indoors, whether you are home or not.  A quieter room or space in the house, or extra blankets in their bed for the night can help them stay soothed and calm amidst all of the scary noises, lights, and vibrations.  

With the Macy’s Fourth of July Fireworks returning to the Hudson River for the nation’s 250th anniversary celebration and also on the East River, millions of New Yorkers will enjoy the festivities—but for many pets, the booming fireworks can be one of the most frightening nights of the year.
