Governor Kathy Hochul swears in student council at Notre Dame Academy Staten Island

Notre Dame Academy Welcomes Governor Kathy Hochul to our School!

Last Week, Our Elementary School Student Council Class Representatives and High School Student Government officers were sworn into office by Governor Kathy Hochul, the first female Governor of New York. The ceremony took place in the 5th Grade classroom, where students were invited to reflect on why they ran for office.
The visit has a special backstory. Violet Cusick, Grade 5, personally invited Governor Hochul to visit Notre Dame Academy when she attended a Women’s History Month event at the Governor’s Mansion in Albany last March.
High School Student Government President Olivia Testa also spoke with the Governor about the New York State law limiting cell phone use in schools. The Governor was glad to hear that our school’s cell phone policy has reduced distractions and is helping build community, especially during lunch periods.
We are so proud of our students, who showed confidence, poise, and leadership. Perhaps we have a future Governor in our midst!
Thank you to Elementary School Principal Kerri Paone and Mike Cusick, CEO of the SIEDC and NDA Parent for organizing the logistics of this special visit, and to our Administration, Directors, and Managers for ensuring the Governor’s visit ran smoothly.
