BP Fossella, Senator Lanza, and Assemblyman Pirozzolo Deliver Public Update Following Clove Lakes Park Sewage Contamination Summit

Staten Island, NY – Borough President Vito Fossella was joined by State Senator Andrew Lanza and State Assemblyman Sam Pirozzolo to update the public with the results of a dialogue held with City agencies regarding the sewage contamination at Clove Lakes Park. This took place at a press conference outside the Stone House at Clove Lakes on Thursday, October 15th at 1:30 PM.
Last month, a series of dye tests confirmed the presence of sewage in the waters of Clove Lakes Park – one of Staten Island’s premier and most frequented public spaces. It is presently believed that the contamination may go back decades.
In response to these reports, Borough President Fossella and his colleagues called upon the City to be clear with the public, outline definitively the causes and effects of the contamination, and develop a swift, complete response to end the contamination and clean the park’s waters.
At first, this culminated with a Summit, which was held earlier today at Borough Hall between the Borough President, State Senator and State Assemblyman, and the involved City agencies, namely the Parks Department, Department of Environmental Protection, and the Deputy Mayor for Operations.
At the press conference, the Borough President and his colleagues will update the public to the result of the Summit and issue a renewed call for collaboration between the agencies, all in the interest of returning Clove Lakes Park to a normal, healthy and fully enjoyable condition.
The Parks Department provided the following in response to our inquiry after the first press conference:
Background:
Parks will continue to investigate all identifiable outfalls into the waterbodies at Clove Lakes Park and will comply with any recommendations from DEC.
We have been working closely with the Stone House concessionaire, who will perform remediation work related to the sewage issue at the restaurant building. Work is expected to begin in coming weeks and be completed before the end of the winter. Parks will support the commencement of this work, including the expediting of permits, to ensure the safety of park patrons and the operation of the concession.
