On Staten Island: Several Polling Locations Will Have Translation Services Provided By Civic Engagement Commission, Where Gaps Exist, Rights To Bring Your Own Interpreter Discussed

Share

Editor’s note: We previously participated in the Civic Engagement Commission’s roundtable on this topic before the primaries, which occurred back in June.  You can see that article and video here. See below for a ethnic and community roundtable from this week to go over the rights that voters have to vote in their own language and the required accommodations, if needed, for them to be able to do so.  As mentioned in the video, voters who need an interpreter in a language that is not provided can bring their own translator.  They do not have to be over eighteen, so a grandchild or child can accompany a registered voter.
Below are some questions that were asked with answers provided again in writing below:
  1. The slide deck said there are Bengali services in Brooklyn & Queens, but there is a large population in the Bronx?
    1. The slide you are referencing is about the Board of Elections’ (BOE) services. BOE covers Bengali in Brooklyn and Queens, while the CEC covers Bengali services in the Bronx, as we do not duplicate BOE services.
  2. Which poll site locations will the CEC be at?
  3. What are the requirements for bringing one’s own interpreter?
  4. How does CEC decide what language service to provide and where? Why are there gaps?
