Limitless Monday – Be Scared More Often

Limitless Monday – Be scared

The other day I witnessed a brief exchange between two friends which provided me with the inspiration for this week’s article.

I overheard a conversation in which a teenager told his friend, “You’re scared to death, aren’t you?” His friend reacted defensively as if he had been insulted.

What they were referring to I don’t know, however, it got me thinking. The teenager had intended to mock his friend, but was he? I figured the opposite could be true, although that outcome would have been unintentional.

Feeling scared is no bad thing. We should all be scared more often. When was the last time you were scared? Being scared is a sign you are living. It’s what you feel before you jump into the unknown.

Imagine approaching the Victoria Falls Bridge ready to bungee jump over the side, 354 feet down to the Zambezi River.

Imagine walking into your first JiuJitsu class and returning week after week knowing your ass is going to be handed to you until it isn’t.

Visualize leaving your job and investing all your spare cash to start a new business venture.

Picture telling your wife or girlfriend of 5 years, it’s over.

Think back and recall the last time you felt scared. If you can’t think of a time, then you need to live more.

Being scared is one thing. It’s how you react to this feeling which is important. It’s healthy to be scared while not flinching from your goal.

Don’t be one of those people who is in the habit of turning on their heels and walking away when fear engulfs them.

When that swaying rope hanging over the bridge is calling out to you, avoid deciding against taking the plunge over the edge. Don’t succumb to the temptation to delay telling your boss you are out of there. Refuse to settle and continue to endure that dysfunctional relationship. The kid on the bus should have responded with confidence and told his friend, “Yeh I am scared, so what. I welcome and embrace fear! What’s your point?”

As you embrace fear, your possibilities will become endless. You will no longer shy away from challenges. Today, I want you to embrace fear. Find more opportunities to be fearful. Above all, stand your ground and step into the cauldron of fear.

Happy Monday!
