OPINION: Taylor Swift: Celebrity Leading By Example Leaves Trail Of Huge Food Bank Donations In Wake On Her Tour
While we hear about Taylor Swift quite often in the media, one of her less-reported activities includes enabling food banks to operate for months in the cities in which her tour stops.
This is not a brand-new occurrence. The much-loved singer-songwriter has been doing this for years. To those who rely on food banks to help meet their families’ needs, it is quite a blessing.
When Taylor Swift’s tour comes through towns across America and across the world, she contacts food banks in the local areas to arrange a donation. And not a small one, either,
According to CBS News, Her donations to an Arizona food bank in March allowed them to send tractor-trailers full of 40,000 pounds of fresh produce to its member food banks. The donation “…also bolstered funding for programs aimed at combating hunger, such as helping eligible children gain access to free and reduced-price school meals and senior citizens obtain food stamps.”
A Seattle-based charity, Food Lifeline, also received a donation from Swift when she visited their town. This group will likely be using the donation to purchase fresh fruits and vegetables, as well as food popular in ethnic communities.
From the CBS article: “The nonprofit organization must now purchase a lot more of the groceries it distributes since the amount of donated food it receives has plummeted during the Covid-19 pandemic. This comes at a time when monetary contributions have fallen back to pre-pandemic levels,” Coleman said.
“But demand has skyrocketed. The charity now provides 280,000 meals a day and serves 1.1 million people. That’s up from 125,000 meals and between 600,000 and 700,000 people prior to the pandemic.”
A food bank in England recently received a large donation, also during the Eras Tour, which is how I became aware of this trend by Taylor Swift. According to an article in the Independent, Taylor Swift made a large donation to the Trussell food bank in Britain, which will have an impact across the country, including in Edinburgh, Liverpool, Cardiff, and London, which are the cities in which the performer toured this summer.
As seems to be the case with the donations from Ms. Swift described previously, this food bank also chose not to disclose the actual amount of the donation. However, for these donations to have the kind of impact they are reported to be having, they must have been quite substantial.
Staten Islander also reached out to Taylor Swift’s publicity team, but they have declined to comment.
One can hope that the singer’s kind gestures are seen by others who have great wealth who are looking to make a difference. Giving to food banks, who then give directly to communities in need, is a really great way to make a real impact and change people’s lives in a small-scale and direct way. Food banks are often the places where people working there have the most awareness of how economic conditions are truly affecting the public, since they tend to see those who are suffering the most.
An excellent example of this was Lt. Esther Mobley of the Salvation Army Stapleton Corps who we interviewed earlier this year. She deals directly with the community, and knows what will help them the most because she talks with them and treats them with kindness. She also won the “Help Bag Hunger” contest at Shoprite recently.
As we have reported on in the past, food banks here in New York are seeing an increased need. At the same time, they are receiving fewer donations of food, and government funding for such programs was on the chopping block again recently. While this was averted in the final Farm Bill, and the programs will continue to receive government funding, it is not enough. This is partly because, coinciding with reduced or flat funding, there are more families who cannot afford food for their families. This affects all types of families, even those who seem to be doing OK to an outside observer.
As a consequence, many food pantries and local soup kitchens are forced to use their funding to actually buy food from grocery suppliers rather than receiving it as donations. This is because the number of people donating food has declined, particularly since the pandemic. This is a real demonstration to those in this field that the need for their services is on the rise rather than on the downturn. It always creates a frustrating situation where some people who need assistance must be turned away because the demand is greater than what these groups are able to provide.
Very often, food insecurity is invisible. Children do not tell their friends that sometimes there is no dinner, that they are not able to eat a meal outside of school on a daily basis, or that they have holes in their towels at home, for example. But this might be their reality.
One of the largest groups to suffer from this increased food insecurity in children. According to ACS data nationwide, in 2022, the poverty rate of those under 18 was 16.3%, compared to the poverty rate for adults 18-64, which is 11.7%. When talking about children, they are truly not responsible for their impoverished situation.
Another group that has begun to really feel the present economic strain is dietary-restricted religious families. These include Orthodox Jews and Muslims who both consume a specialized diet with multiple restrictions. Particularly among these families, food insecurity can be a real problem.
Since they are a minority group already, and they have different food requirements, many of the charities that serve these families have been speaking up, letting people know that they have an increased need.
According to a recent meeting of the Staten Island Hunger Task Force, there are more families in these communities that are now food insecure. One thing that is different now than pre-pandemic is a reduction in the amount of shame that they experience. In other words, they will come and ask for help if they need it, whereas before the pandemic, many of them would not ask.
Taylor Swift is setting an excellent example in caring for those in poverty, who can be considered the least among our brethren. She is doing the work that we are all supposed to do, with almost every religion instructing its followers to care for the poor, the downtrodden, the sick, the elderly, and children.
There is not an organized religion that does not ask these things of its adherents. By demonstrating the difference that a celebrity can make in the lives of others, Taylor Swift has shared her joy with not only her millions of followers and fans, but also those of low income and modest means who will be able to provide food for their families because of her help.
