Limitless Monday: Break Your Routine – But Reestablish It Quickly

Limitless Monday – Break your routine

It’s part of our human make-up to follow routines. Some of us are more regimented than others.

I am a big advocate of maintaining a routine. It creates discipline and discipline leads to success. However, it occurred to me the other day, after attending an 80s disco, that sometimes it is important to break your routine. One of the most important lessons concerning routines is that it is ok to break them, but it is essential we return to them without delay.

For example, if you are on an overseas business trip, you should still try to follow your normal exercise routine as closely as possible. If there is no gym in the hotel, go for a run or exercise in your room. Sometimes that is not possible, if you have been entertaining ‘clients,’ for example. However, as long as you return to your routine in short order, then a break is healthy.

The bottom line is: we all need variety in our lives. Routine is healthy, but it can also be dull.

Think about it: do you think Elon Musk follows a rigid routine? His purchase of Twitter and his detour into politics are all high profile examples of breaking from routine. It’s where the magic happens. Then you return to your routine ready for the next adventure. Adventures are a healthy break from routine. It’s something we all need.

Whether you break your routine to attend an event, a party, a seminar, go on vacation, a date, a job interview or start or buy a business, it’s all part of the colorful fabric of life. Dull lives are often created by following a strict regime with little or no deviation.

It’s sensible to be reluctant to break routines and question the importance of alternative options. It is not wise to brush any possible non-routine events away without consideration. Be flexible with your routine but disciplined.

It’s a break in routine that brings color into your life. The big successes that surround us were not achieved by following a routine to the T. Be ready to leap into a new endeavor and then jump back into your routine. The person who says, “I can’t do that, it doesn’t fit into my routine” is destined for a dull, inconsequential life. We must aspire to be the person who says “Let’s do it!”.

Happy Monday!
