Limitless Monday – Stop Talking Sh*t

I was watching an early episode of The Apprentice the other day. One of the candidates revealed his true colors early when he answered the phone and to his surprise was greeted by The Donald. Rather than listen to Donald Trump’s instructions, a wise move considering it was his show, he started blabbing about total crap. It turned out this outpouring of nonsense was not an isolated incident brought on by nerves; he simply loved the sound of his own voice. It didn’t take too long for Mr Trump to send him packing. A little too long in my opinion, mind you.

The main advantages of getting to the point quickly is that you can accomplish much more. A few years back, my in-house lawyer would waste much of her time in meetings talking about the weather, her weekend, politics and the cost of a latte before finally getting to the point. An average meeting with her took 30 minutes to discuss something which should have taken 5. She then had the audacity to complain that she didn’t have enough time to complete some of the projects I had assigned her.

The most successful people are the ones who are super productive. They are often charming but that doesn’t prevent them from getting to the nub of the matter. Reserve idle chit chat to the bar.

Combining concise communication with charm is a powerful formula for success, enabling you to boost daily productivity and far outperform the average person.

Take the story of two up and coming comedians. The first comedian performs two shows a week on a Friday and Saturday night. After each show he hangs off the edge of the bar until closing, often going home with a star struck member of the audience. The second comedian on the other hand performs 7 days a week, with four skits on both Friday and Saturday. He is too busy travelling from one venue to another to socialize with the audience. He is solely focused on his profession. Who do you think has the greatest potential from these two budding comedians?

Idle chit chat is for the idle, that’s not you!

Happy Monday!
