Limitless Monday: Act As If There’s No Speed Limit
Limitless Monday – Act as if there’s no speed limit
I was reading an article last week titled, “There’s no speed limit” by Derek Sivers. It recalls how a student graduates a four year music course in two and a half. Derek’s conclusion is, “The standard pace is for chumps — the system is designed so anyone can keep up. If you’re more driven than most people, you can do way more than anyone expects. And this principle applies to all of life, not just school.”
How many times in your life has someone told you that your dream or plan is unrealistic? That, “You are living in cloud cuckoo land”?
The question is did you ignore them and continue anyway or did you listen to this dullard and shelve your plan in favor of a more realistic and achievable one?
If you are in the latter group, don’t despair: we have all made the same mistake. Even the most successful amongst us. The difference is the successful chose to ignore the naysayers when it mattered the most. Life advice is not all negative and meant to direct you towards the path of the crowd, although most of it is. Phrases like, “that’s not normal” or the “average person wouldn’t do that” are words uttered by average people and who the f*ck wants to be average or normal? Do you think smart phones, skyscrapers, cars, and airplanes which we have come to rely on were invented and developed by average people?
We must start thinking in a different way. What would the most successful do in this situation? Or, what would a wise man do? As soon as someone says that your plan is unrealistic, get into the habit of putting them in the loser category, and never listen to their opinion again. Look for unrealistic plans, goals, and dreams. This is where progress is made and riches accumulated. Work on the principle that there are no speed limits, that everything is possible, because it is.
In the words of George Bernard Shaw:
“The reasonable man adapts himself to the world; the unreasonable one persists in trying to adapt the world to himself. Therefore all progress depends on the unreasonable man.”
Happy Monday!
