According to the American Legion: “Ollis was serving with the 10th Mountain Division when his outpost in Ghazni came under attack by insurgents. During the battle, the 24-year-old Staten Island native stepped in front of wounded Polish Lt. Karol Cierpika to protect him from a suicide bomber. His actions were credited with saving several other lives. “

 

Malliotakis Applauds President Trump’s Decision to Award Medal of Honor to Staten Island Hero Michael Ollis

(STATEN ISLAND, NY) — Congresswoman Nicole Malliotakis (NY-11) applauds President Trump’s decision to posthumously award the Medal of Honor to U.S. Army Staff Sergeant Michael Ollis.

“We were notified by the White House that Staten Island’s hometown hero, U.S. Army Staff Sergeant Michael Ollis, has been approved for the Medal of Honor for his extraordinary act of heroism. In 2013, Staff Sergeant Ollis gave his life to save an allied soldier, and his courage, selflessness, and sacrifice represent the very best of our nation. Staff Sergeant Ollis’ final act was worthy of the Medal of Honor and after years of advocacy from the American Legion, our elected officials, and the Staten Island community, we are grateful to President Donald Trump for recognizing Staff Sergeant Ollis’ extraordinary heroism with our nation’s highest military honor.”

Staten Island, NY – Borough President Vito Fossella issued the following statement regarding the approval of a posthumous Medal of Honor for US Army Staff Sergeant Michael H. Ollis:
“We applaud the decision of President Trump to posthumously award Staff Sergeant Michael H. Ollis, a Staten Island hero who sacrificed his life in Afghanistan to save another, with the Medal of Honor.
SSG Ollis’ legacy is one of courage and selflessness. With this honor, his sacrifice is immortalized forever as a tremendous example of the enduring American spirit, for many on Staten Island and across the country.
We thank President Trump for making the decision to ensure SSG Ollis’ legacy lives on for generations to come.
To Robert and Linda Ollis, you and Michael deserve this moment many times over.”
