Sports For Local Kids Should Be Fun: New Spectator Rules To Curb Disturbances, Restore Good Sportsmanship; Honoring SSG Ollis Of Staten Island

Editor’s note: Staten Islanders love their sports, especially when their kids are the participants.  The borough president kicked off the girls basketball championship tournament and boys high school wrestling. In order to prevent disruptions between parents in the future at CYO sponsored sporting events, these new rules were arrived at.  

 

BP Fossella, Catholic Youth Organization to Announce New Rules for Parent and Spectator Altercations

Staten Island, NY – Borough President Vito Fossella and Catholic Youth Organization officials announce new rules pertaining to parents and spectators engaging in disruptive behavior during CYO games at a press conference in the Mt. Loretto CYO Community Center gymnasium on Tuesday, January 13th at 11:00 AM.
The announcement comes in response to a recent trend of spectator altercations at sporting events, which disrupts the environment of good faith, teamwork, and sportsmanship that is intended of these events.
In the weeks following the incident, the Borough President assisted CYO in reaching a reasonable standard to hold parents and other spectators accountable for disruptive behavior.
The Borough President and CYO officials have unveiled a new set of rules pertaining to spectator disruptions at the press conference, in the hope of cultivating a recurring sense of normalcy and good spirits at sporting events.

 

“A True American Hero”: BP Fossella Announces Support for Effort to Remember SSG Michael H. Ollis with the Medal of Honor

Staten Island, NY — Borough President Vito Fossella announced today that he has penned a letter to President Donald Trump in total support of posthumously honoring Staff Sergeant Michael J. Ollis with the Medal of Honor.
SSG Ollis was a New Dorp-native who served in the 10th Mountain Division in the US Army during the War on Terror. He was deployed to Afghanistan and tragically died in 2013 protecting a Polish soldier in combat. He is remembered across Staten Island for his courage and tremendous sacrifice.
For the time since his passing, many Staten Islanders, including SSG Ollis’ parents, Robert and Linda Ollis, have advocated for SSG Ollis’ sacrifice to be officially recognized and honored at the national level.  Borough President Fossella has long supported this effort to honor his heroic example.
“Staff Sergeant Ollis is the very example of the American spirit – tenacity, patriotism, courage, and service to your fellow man. His ultimate sacrifice in defense of our country, saving the life of somebody else, is an incredibly heroic action that resonates in our hearts to this very day. We hope Staff Sergeant Ollis can be bestowed the Medal of Honor, a medal he is so deeply deserving of, so that the generations to come can look to him and learn from his profound example,” Borough President Fossella said.
On the heels of the recent announcement that the Secretary of War, Pete Hegseth, recommended SSG Ollis for the honor, the Borough President issued the below letter to President Trump
