Staten Island Hearing Of New York State Community Commission on Reparations Remedies (NYSCCRR) Focuses On Quantifying Economic Harms
The NYC Mayor’s Office recently announced that they are welcoming public comment on the City’s racial equity plan to help address some of the discrepancies that exist in multiple areas of public life. This is part of a similar effort by the City to that of the State, where both are seeking to address the same issues, but at different levels of government (state and city). The city is also further along in the process, having already formulated a racial equity plan to address some of the biases they have found to exist. See below for a slideshow of photos from this event. A post event release is expected to be received soon:
The Commission held a public hearing on Saturday, March 21, from 12–4 PM at the Staten Island Urban Center (208 Bay Street, 2nd Floor). The hearing focused on Economic Development: Quantifying Harms and is part of the Commission’s statewide effort to gather testimony on the lasting impacts of slavery, discrimination, and systemic inequities.
Among the featured speakers was renowned economist and professor, Dr. William Darity Jr., PhD. He co-authored “From Here to Equality: Reparations for Black Americans in the Twenty-First Century.”
The data and feedback from this hearing, along with others around the state, is being collected to influence future policy changes surrounding racial equity and bias, particularly where it persists in economic inequality and exclusion. As mentioned above, the City is already in the policy-making phase when it comes to this particular issue. At both levels, these collections are based on the wishes of voters as expressed in recent elections over the past several years.
The New York State Community Commission on Reparations Remedies is tasked with examining the legacy of slavery, subsequent discrimination against people of African descent, and the impact these forces continue to have in the present day. Governor Hochul signed bill S.1163-A/A.7691 establishing the Commission on December 19, 2023.
