See below for a slideshow of photos taken at this event by our photographer, Damian (Waldo) Cassadine:
We also covered this event, along with details about why it is celebrated, in 2024. The parade is a celebration of the beginning of the Mexican war of Independence against the Spanish Empire.
Below is from the page about the event by La Colmena:
With hearts full of gratitude, we want to extend a massive thank you to our incredible community, sponsors, allies, volunteers, team, and board of directors for making the 7th Annual Mexican Independence Day Parade on Staten Island a resounding success.
Your contagious energy, passion, and tireless commitment turned this celebration into something truly unforgettable. Seeing everyone come together enjoying the vibrant Folklórico dance, live music, and rich cultural traditions was a powerful reminder of what our community can achieve when we stand united.
We couldn’t have done this without each and every one of you. Thank you for showing up, bringing your best energy, and supporting our mission to preserve our heritage for future generations every step of the way. See you all next year!
History of the Parade
The inaugural celebration of Mexican Independence was held in 2019 in front of their headquarters in Port Richmond. The parade’s route takes place on Port Richmond Avenue, home to many businesses and Mexican culture. This allowed local residents the opportunity to openly celebrate their origin and culture. Since 2020, thousands of locals from several Staten Island communities have gathered in Port Richmond to celebrate Mexican Independence Day by participating in La Colmena’s Annual Mexican Independence Day Parade.
