Organization’s Mission Statement:NAMI-NYC Staten Island is the local affiliate of NAMI (the National Alliance on Mental Illness). What started as a small group of families gathered around a kitchen table in 1979 has blossomed into the nation’s leading voice on mental health. Today, we are an alliance of more than 600 local affiliates who work in communities throughout the USA to provide support, education, and advocacy and to raise awareness about mental illness and that was not previously available to those in need. The Staten Island Alliance on Mental Illness (SIAMI), now known as NAMI-NYC Staten Island, was formed in January 1985 by three parents and a sibling without the involvement or aid of professionals. They declined offers of free meeting and office space feeling that any indebtedness could interfere with advocacy efforts. NAMI-NYC SI remains independent to this day.
