The East Harlem Hoops is an adult basketball league started 10 years ago by The Salvation Army Greater NY Division. The league was started as a way to keep young men off the streets and turned into a successful league known throughout the city. The program provided a safe, warm place for young men as well as giveing them access to food pantry items (including fresh produce) and other Corps services and opportunities (i.e. camp, Christmas and Thanksgiving assistance).
Here is a success story/testimonial of an individual who has been positively impacted by East Harlem Hoops:
Every year, 12 teams from different Corps compete and most are from the neighborhood of East Harlem. One team is solely from Brooklyn. And the others are teams made up of people in NY, NJ, and PA. In addition to celebrating its 10th anniversary, the league had its 2022 Spring Championship on Tuesday May 17th, 2022 at 8PM at the Manhattan Citadel. The playoffs took place that week – second game was on Thursday night, May 12th – to determine which teams will go to the Championship next Tuesday.
To provide further background and highlight the success of this program, there are several players who tried out for the USA 3 on 3 basketball team. They also have several players who have their own YouTube and Instagram channels.
