NYC DOT Launches Updated Parking App For Street Parking Payments



New ParkNYC app makes it easier for drivers to pay for parking in New York City.

Permanent pay-as-you go feature means drivers no longer need to pre-load e-wallet.

New York –New York City Department of Transportation (DOT) Commissioner Ydanis Rodriguez announced today the launch of a new ParkNYC app that offers improved features that make it easier for drivers to pay for parking in New York City.

“NYC DOT’s new ParkNYC app makes paying for parking more convenient and less time-consuming,” said Commissioner Rodriguez. “This update addresses users’ top request: to pay as they go seamlessly without the need to pre-load a digital wallet. We are proud to launch a new ParkNYC app to help in DOT’s efforts to modernize curb management.”

The new ParkNYC app includes a modern and user-friendly interface, featuring the ability to pay-as-you-go for a parking session, and the continued ability to pre-load a ParkNYC wallet. Many of the same convenient features will still be available: users can check how much time is remaining, choose to receive push notifications when time is about to expire, and extend their time to maximum limit without returning to the vehicle—all without needing to put a receipt on their dashboards.

Current ParkNYC users will not need to download a different app.  The existing app will either update automatically, or users will be asked to update it in the Apple App Store or in Google Play. However, returning users must select “sign up” when first launching the new app, which requires a new account be created on the ParkNYC app or website, using the same mobile phone number that was previously registered.  Existing wallet balances have been transferred to the new ParkNYC app and will be accessible if the user chooses to pay for parking with their wallet. Launched in 2016, pay-by-cell now accounts for 42% of all parking meter payments. Improving the digital parking experience furthers NYC DOT’s efforts to create a modern vision for curb management and fosters proper parking turnover across New York City. NYC DOT and its contracted app provider, Flowbird, will promote the new ParkNYC app through digital advertising platforms.

The new ParkNYC app is among the first steps in DOT’s work to modernize metered parking in the years ahead, which will include the installation of new “pay-by-plate” meters.
