Sen. Scarcella-Spanton’s Veterans Property Tax Bill Passes Senate – Allows Active Duty Military Members To Receive Property Tax Discount
SENATOR SCARCELLA-SPANTON’S VETERANS PROPERTY TAX EXEMPTION BILL PASSES THE SENATE
ALBANY, NY – Senator Scarcella-Spanton’s bill that relates to a real property tax exemption for property owned by certain persons performing active duty in a combat zone, passed on the Senate floor.
Currently, active duty members of the United States armed forces do not qualify for the property tax exemptions afforded to Veterans. This bill recognizes that those who volunteer to serve our country should be afforded benefits in recognition of their service, and willingness to make the ultimate sacrifice for their country.
Senate Bill 5442 authorizes municipalities to offer a real property tax exemption for property owned by certain persons performing active duty in a combat zone in an amount to the extent of fifteen percent of the assessed value of the real property, but will not exceed twelve thousand dollars. This legislation is a critical step towards supporting our active-duty service members and their families.
“Our active-duty service members and their families here in New York State make immense sacrifices to protect our freedoms. When my husband was deployed, I was a new mom living alone in Colorado, hundreds of miles away from my support system back home in New York. My experiences from that time really pushed me to move forward with legislation like this bill– that will provide much-needed relief to our service members, and ensure that their families are able to remain in their homes without undue financial stress” said Senator Scarcella-Spanton.
This is Senator Scarcella-Spanton’s fifth bill that has passed in the Senate since beginning her first term as a State Senator in January. Senator Scarcella-Spanton was appointed as Chair of the New York State Senate Committee on Veterans, Homeland Security and Military Affairs, and is a member of the Committees on Civil Service and Pensions, Cultural Affairs, Tourism, Parks and Recreation Disabilities, Insurance, Labor, and Women’s Issues.
