Free SummerStage Concert On National Hip-Hop Celebration Day At Stapleton Waterfront Park

Maker Park Radio, a nonprofit streaming radio station in Stapleton, worked with SummerStage to curate this event. It began as a vision by Kristin Wallace to make sure this year did not go by without a 50 Year Anniversary of Hip Hop celebration on Staten Island.

The event had the pillars of Hip Hop represented. Emcees, DJs, Dance, Graffiti, and Education, with Streetwear and Performances by artists that were a part of Staten Island’s Hip Hop History, as well as those who have followed in the footsteps of those who paved the way.

Emcees were chosen for their knowledge and history of the music genre. Adding the two artists from the 5X5 event made it as it was meant to be, everyone coming together to make a legendary event that Staten Island deserved.

We are grateful to Council Member Kamilla Hanks for helping to make sure this event could happen in Stapleton where we were able to see how the waterfront park can be used for cultural events. The backdrop of the NYC skyline and Verrazano Bridge as the sun set made us feel proud to be from Staten Island.

My two favorite performances were where The Jazztronauts played as the backup band for Tyrone Briggs. It showed how music is universal, and how a live band can be used in Hip Hop performances.

I also loved Raheim’s set, he used his time onstage to bring up so many people to sing with him that were a huge part of Hip Hop history in Staten Island.

And, of course, Raekwon’s set was amazing. He got a little emotional talking about how even though there were so many Hip Hop 50 events happening in New York City, there was nowhere else he would rather be than his hometown.

It was a beautiful event, and it made so many people happy. And the fact that it happened on the actual date considered the birth of Hip Hop made it all that more special.

We provide training, workshops and practice time. And we produce many live concerts in Maker Park throughout the summer.
