ALBANY, NY – Senator Scarcella-Spanton, Chair of the Veterans, Homeland Security, and Military Affairs Committee, passed Senate Bill S5018, which establishes a veteran career assistance program within the SUNY and CUNY systems.
Cosponsored by Senator Joseph P. Addabbo Jr. of the 15th Senate District, Senator Jacob Ashby of the 43rd Senate District, Senator Andrew J. Lanza of the 24th Senate District, and Senator Jack M. Martins of the 7th Senate District, Senate Bill S5018 will provide veterans with assistance in resume writing and employment placement services.
S.5018 will offer comprehensive support to veterans, including skill-building through resume writing and direct employment placement services. This legislation stresses the importance of breaking down barriers that often hinder veterans from accessing education and employment opportunities that align with their skills and experiences.
Too often, our veterans encounter barriers in accessing education and employment opportunities that match their skills and experiences. Our veterans in New York State require greater and more immediate access to resources to facilitate their transition into civilian life. That’s why this program’s provision for an on-campus location is crucial.
“As a proud advocate for our veterans and a CUNY graduate myself, I understand the challenges our veterans face as they transition to civilian life. This legislation will ensure that those who have sacrificed for our nation have access to the resources and guidance they need to succeed.
“Our veterans deserve every opportunity to thrive in civilian life. This program will provide them with the resources and support necessary to make a successful transition, and build fulfilling careers” said Senator Scarcella-Spanton.
Senator Scarcella-Spanton was appointed as Chair of the New York State Senate Committee on Veterans, Homeland Security and Military Affairs, and is a member of the Committees on Civil Service and Pensions, Cultural Affairs, Tourism, Parks and Recreation, Disabilities, Insurance, Labor, and Women’s Issues.
