Bayonne Officers On Annual Police Unity Tour to D.C.

Editor’s note: Staten Islander News previously covered the Bayonne Police Dept’s recent promotions, as well as the swearing in of new police officers.  The City of Bayonne also honored a Korean War veteran who was one of the Chosin Few during the ceremony opening the Chosin Few Way on Route 440. We’ve also covered the recent rise in robberies and high end car thefts in Linden as well as in NYC.

Twelve members of the Bayonne Police Department are taking part in the annual Police Unity Tour which draws officers throughout the nation to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial at Judiciary Square in Washington, D.C.

The Police Unity Tour was organized in 1997 with the hope of raising public awareness of police officers who have died in the line of duty and to honor their sacrifices.

The Police Unity Tour began in 1997 with eighteen riders on a four-day fundraising bicycle ride from Florham Park, New Jersey, to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial.

The 300-mile tour takes place every May.

This year’s tour began on May 9, and will take four days.

The tour’s motto is “We ride for those who died.”

The Bayonne contingent will be making stops in New Jersey and Delaware on the road to Washington, D.C.

City of Bayonne

Bayonne is a community that retains many of the elements of a small town. One and two family homes, small apartment buildings, and small business predominate. There is a population of 62,000 people who take pride in their hometown and its history. Bayonne residents and their ancestors moved to the city from many parts of the world. During colonial times and the first century of the American Republic, the Dutch, British, and Africans were the first groups to arrive after the Native Americans. Subsequent waves of immigrants came from all over Europe, especially between the 1880s and the 1920s. In recent decades, sources of immigration have largely been represented from countries in Latin America, the Middle East, and Southeastern Asia. Each group has left its mark on the cultural, religious and political life of the community.
