Protecting Homeowners Against Squatters
SENATOR SCARCELLA-SPANTON AND COUNCILWOMAN HANKS MAKE ANNOUNCEMENT ABOUT PROTECTING HOMEOWNERS AGAINST SQUATTERS
Editor’s note: Staten Islander News previously covered the passage of several provisions in the state budget to limit squatters’ rights and restore properties across New York State to their owners. From that article:
“Stemming from her proposed legislation Senate Bill S8995, this measure clarifies that squatters are not considered tenants, ensuring property owners are not unjustly stripped of their rights. This is a crucial step in protecting homeowners and preventing situations where squatters unjustly claim more rights than the rightful property owners. It will also allow law enforcement to arrest and to charge squatters with burglary.”
STATEN ISLAND, NY – On Friday, June 21, Senator Jessica Scarcella-Spanton and Councilwoman Kamillah Hanks held a press conference in regards to squatting issues on the North Shore of Staten Island to make an announcement that will help combat this issue.
From Senator Scarcella-Spanton’s Facebook page:
“I joined Kamillah Hanks Council Member-D49 to talk about our legislation at the state and city level to combat the scourge of squatters and the damage they cause. Proud that part of my bill to restore power back to the lawful property owners of my district became law. This gives Staten Island District Attorney’s Office the ability to charge squatters with burglary to hold perpetrators accountable. Grateful for CM Hanks’ work to tackle this at the city level and further protect our constituents.”
