Malliotakis Announces $2.5 Million for Pier 1 Restoration Project

(STATEN ISLAND, NY) – Congresswoman Nicole Malliotakis (NY-11) announced $2.5 million in federal funding she secured for the New York City Economic Development Corporation (NYCEDC) to renovate the currently closed Pier 1 on Staten Island’s North Shore, reestablishing public access to the waterfront pier and providing recreational and educational opportunities for the local community.

“Pier 1 has been closed for the last seven years, preventing our community from accessing and utilizing everything the North Shore waterfront has to offer,” Malliotakis said. “I’m proud to have secured $2.5 million in federal funding to help restore this landmark for my constituents, reestablishing waterfront access and bringing good-paying employment opportunities to this area. I look forward to continuing to work with NYCEDC and my local colleagues to implement the city’s North Shore Action Plan and transform our community with welcome recreational and educational activity and inject billions of revenue into our community.”

Pier 1 has been closed since 2017 after structural issues were discovered during an inspection. Today, the first 300 feet of the 845-foot pier is open, however, the rest remains closed off due to safety concerns. While there is currently no planned start date for reconstruction of the pier, NYCEDC is working toward a Request for Proposal (RFP) process, design and plans for community outreach.

“We are committed to improve and to enhance the North Shore waterfront, which we believe is an untapped jewel,” said Staten Island Borough President Vito Fossella. “We thank Congresswoman Malliotakis for securing funding to help bring Pier 1 back to life. The pier has been closed for far too long and needs to reopen sooner rather than later for all to enjoy.”

“I want to thank Congresswoman Nicole Malliotakis for her support,” said New York City Council Member Kamillah Hanks. “The $2.5 million in federal funding for Pier 1 is a crucial step towards reclaiming our waterfront and enhancing our community. This project will reopen public access to Pier 1 and provide invaluable recreational and educational opportunities.”

“The North Shore of Staten Island is home to endless possibilities, and we have a clear roadmap to deliver results for Staten Islanders including the renovation and restoration of Pier 1,” said NYCEDC President and CEO Kimball. “I thank Rep. Malliotakis for helping secure critical funding for this pier and we are looking forward to working alongside all of our partners in the public and private sector to start a new chapter for the North Shore of Staten Island.”

“I want to thank everyone involved in this project – we’re trying to do so much to get the North Shore up and running and built after all these years,” said Community Board 1 District Manager Joan Cusack. “Everybody has to be involved. It’s a fight we’ve been fighting for a very long time and if everybody’s not there with 100 percent of themselves and everything they do, please, please be there and let’s get this done.”
