Limitless Monday: Think Big!

Limitless Monday – Think big!

It was once said, “If you are going to be thinking anyway, think big.”

That quotation is attributable to Donald Trump. Now, whether you like former President Donald Trump or not is not the point here. Removing politics from the equation, you cannot fault Trump’s ambition. He sure thinks bigger than the vast majority of us. However, he doesn’t just think big; he acts on his thoughts. You don’t get any bigger than running the most powerful country in the world!

This article isn’t about the pros and cons of Donald Trump. It’s about how we can think and act big.

Why is thinking and acting big important? Surely we should seek a modest lifestyle like the Buddha?

Simplicity is not to be sniffed at. Leading an uncluttered life has many advantages, however, you can still follow a ‘think big’ philosophy and maintain a simple lifestyle.

Elon Musk recently decided to downsize by selling all his luxury homes to reside in a small house near his launch pad in Texas. Possessions require management, which require time. Multiple cars, multiple homes, an abundance of clothes and nic nacs cluttering your desk: that’s a way to divert your attention from thinking big.

If you have ambitions of owning a single candy store, a small craft business, or holding down a 9-5 job, this article is relevant to you. We should all be thinking big whether you work as a sanitation worker or a lawyer. Thinking big is essential to our daily motivation and future development.

If your thoughts are concerned with maintaining your current status, then you not only put your current status at risk, you are by definition limiting your growth potential.

Let’s look at an example. Say you are a billing manager. You are happy with your salary, a small bonus every year, the odd pay rise, and your vacation and sick day entitlement. Perhaps you have dreams of being promoted at some point, but it’s something you are not obsessed with. You can take it or leave it.

Now fast forward 5 years. AI has replaced much of your job. You are now forced to retrain and find another job. You will probably start at the bottom again. By not thinking ambitiously you put your future at risk. You are at the mercy of outside factors. You are limiting your potential. The alternative is you decide that billing is only a stepping stone. Ask yourself, where do I see myself in 5 years time? What are the possibilities?

Perhaps you answer those two questions with, I want to be the director of finance, or, I want to run my own business.

The advantage of thinking big is you stay ahead of the crowd, you avoid job and business obsolescence. You stay relevant.

That is the key here: remaining relevant. Having something to offer. There is no point having ambitions to own and operate a single candy store if the world of candy retail has moved online. Be flexible with your ambitions.

Think big in everything you do, that way you will constantly improve beyond your own expectations and the expectations of others.

Today, I want you to set aside a few minutes. No distractions. Your task is to review your goals and to ask the probing question: am I thinking big? If the honest answer is no, then it’s time to reassess the goals that fail the test. It’s time to start thinking big. Start today!

Happy Monday!
