Staten Island, NY—The Alice Austen House presents new paintings by multidisciplinary artist Evan Paul English inspired by the archival collection. Alice Austen (1866–1952) was a passionate scrapbook enthusiast, a practice that showcased her significant artistic abilities and paved the way for her distinguished career in photography. During her lifetime, she filled many pages with ephemera featuring ornate floral designs. English, known for his expertise in reinterpreting and painting vintage floral patterns, has studied Austen’s paper archives alongside research staff. He will debut a permanent wallpaper design for the museum’s dining room and present a temporary exhibition of paintings in the galleries inspired by his research.
Evan Paul English: Scrap Book is curated by Victoria Munro (Executive Director, Alice Austen House). This exhibition, featured as a must-see in Hyperallergic’s Fall 2024 New York Art Guide, will be on view beginning Saturday, September 14th, 2024 in the contemporary galleries of the Alice Austen House.
An opening reception will be held at the Alice Austen House on Saturday, September 14th 2024 at 2pm. To attend, register online here.
Gallery hours are Thursday through Friday, 12:00pm to 5:00pm, and Saturday + Sunday, 11:00pm to 5:00pm. Click here for additional information.
A limited-edition archival exhibition poster—to be released Friday, August 30, at noon EST—will be available for purchase on the artist’s website. Orders may be placed for pickup in person during the exhibition opening or shipped within the U.S. for an additional cost. There will be fewer than twenty-five posters available for sale, each priced at $150.
