Tackling Dengue Fever In Honduras: Hope For A Healthier Humanity Teaches Prevention, Awareness, Treatment For This Presently Incurable Disease
Hope for a Healthier Humanity Tackles Dengue Fever Crisis in Honduras
Editor’s note: Staten Islander News has covered ticks a number of times in the past, from the most effective tick removal methods, including one that doesn’t require tweezers, to some of the more effective tick control methods such as the Tick-Tock Tick Control System which applies pesticides to rodents, and the system that applies the same insecticide to deer antlers, where the ticks live and reproduce.
New York: As dengue fever continues to pose a severe health threat in Honduras, with over 99,000 suspected cases reported this year, nonprofit Hope for a Healthier Humanity — a foundation dedicated to improving the health and nutrition of children, expectant mothers, and families in Latin and Central America through sustainable programs — is intensifying its efforts to combat the spread of the disease in affected communities. The “Lucha contra el dengue” (“Fight against dengue”) program, focused primarily on the departments of La Paz and Comayagua, is providing critical support to reduce the impact of dengue fever on vulnerable populations with a three-pronged approach we call PAT: prevention, awareness, and treatment.
To combat dengue, Hope for a Healthier Humanity actively conducts regular training sessions for volunteers, who in turn train local community leaders and members on effective prevention strategies and available treatment options for those impacted. In addition, the foundation has worked tirelessly to supply local healthcare facilities with essential medical supplies focused on rehydration while organizing and implementing large-scale community clean-up campaigns aimed at eliminating mosquito breeding sites. These efforts, carried out in partnership with the Honduran Ministry of Health, aim to curb the rising number of dengue cases and prevent further loss of life.
“Dengue is a growing public health concern, and immediate action is crucial,” said Doctor Carolina Espino, Program Director for Honduras. “Our initiatives are designed to not only respond to current cases but also build sustainable, long-term solutions for prevention.”
The “Fight against dengue” program builds upon Hope for a Healthier Humanity’s recent success in Honduras in reducing child malnutrition rates by 88% in Honduras over a period of nine months. These malnutrition-reduction efforts continue alongside the PAT approach to dengue, demonstrating HHH’s commitment to supporting the health and well-being of communities throughout Honduras as they work to overcome these critical public health challenges.
