Protest at The Plaza! ASPCA Event to Face Uproar Over Meat Industry Endorsement

Editor’s note: Staten Islander provided several questions to PETA about this particular protest, and why it is so important.  The questions and their answers are below:
1- In what ways has the ASPCA likely or definitely learned of the animal welfare abuses committed by the group they support?
A- The Humane Society released this statement regarding its connection to GAP on 9/6/24: https://www.humanesociety.org/news/peta-targeting-our-gap-work
2- What other companies or charities support the Global Animal Partnership, either by board of directors membership or financial support?
A- The CIWF (Compassion in World Farming) and HerdDogg are two major partners, in addition to the ASPCA and Humane Society of the US.
3- What’s the goal of this protest?
A- Our goal is for ASPCA leaders to resign from the board of directors of the Global Animal Partnership.
From PETA’s original release about the protest:
On October 10th, the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals’ (ASPCA) Annual Humane Awards Luncheon at The Plaza hotel was thrown into turmoil as dozens of PETA supporters converged outside the event holding blown-up images of pigs and turkeys with the words “Stop Betraying Us!”
The protesters appealed to ASPCA leaders to resign from the board of directors of the Global Animal Partnership, a humane-washing program that enables factory farmers to slap deceptive “animal welfare certified” labels on their products—even though PETA investigators have documented widespread, severe, and systemic cruelty and suffering at all 12 certified farms they visited, all of which can be seen in videos like this one.
In a one-two punch, PETA will also run a full-page color ad in Sunday’s editions of The Washington Post and The New York Times informing readers about this shady alliance and proclaiming, “It Has to Stop!”
“An animal welfare group approving factory farms is like an oncologist endorsing a tobacco company,” says PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman. “PETA calls on the ASPCA to stop duping kind consumers about whom their food comes from and urges everyone to please go vegan—because the only truly humane meal is one that no animal had to suffer and die for.”
At Global Animal Partnership–certified Plainville Farms, a PETA investigator documented that workers kicked and stomped on turkeys, broke their necks, hit them with an iron bar, and simulated sex acts with them, among other atrocities. The investigation resulted in former workers being charged with a total of 141 counts of cruelty to animals—the largest number in any factory-farmed animal case—and 10 former workers have been convicted so far. At another humane-certified facility, Sweet Stem Farm, a PETA investigator found pigs crammed into severely crowded sheds on concrete floors and with painful, bloody rectal prolapses as large as an orange that were left untreated.
New York — Moments ago, a PETA supporter wearing a pig mask and holding a sign reading, “Stop Betraying Us!” was dragged out of The Plaza Hotel and arrested on its steps after interrupting the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals’ (ASPCA) Annual Humane Awards Luncheon, apologizing to the awardees for the interruption but condemning the group for pimping for the factory farming industry at the expense of animal suffering and deaths. Dozens of others joined in the protest. Photos of the protest are here.

Before being hauled out by security, the protester implored ASPCA’s top brass to resign immediately from the board of directors of Global Animal Partnership, a highly deceptive “humane-washing” scheme that props up the cruelty inherent in factory farming. The program allows animal-exploiting companies to place grossly misleading “animal welfare certified” labels on meat, eggs, and dairy—even though PETA investigators have documented systemic cruelty and suffering at all 12 certified facilities they visited, all of which can be seen in videos like this one.
“The ASPCA is betraying animals and caring consumers by putting its stamp of approval on meat, eggs, and dairy from factory farms where animals suffer mightily before being killed,” says PETA President Ingrid Newkirk. “PETA urges the ASPCA to cut ties with this humane-washing scam and urges everyone to take responsibility to stop cruelty to animals by please going vegan.”
PETA’s investigation into Plainville Farms—which at the time was Global Animal Partnership–certified—documented that workers kicked, beat, and threw turkeys and left ailing birds to suffer without treatment. The investigation resulted in former workers being charged with six felonies and a total of 141 counts of cruelty to animals—the largest number in any factory-farmed animal case in U.S. history—and 10 former workers have been convicted so far. PETA’s investigation into Sweet Stem Farm, which was also certified by Global Animal Partnership at the time, revealed that pigs were crammed into severely crowded sheds and had painful, bloody rectal prolapses.
The group previously appealed to the leaders of the ASPCA, the Humane Society of the United States, and Compassion in World Farming urging them to step down from the board of directors of the Global Animal Partnership, as PETA and another group, Farm Forward, have done.

‘Betrayal!’ PETA’s National Ad Blitz Condemns ASPCA, Humane Society Endorsement of Factory Farms

Washington — “It Has to Stop!” That’s the message from PETA that appeared in an eye-popping new full-page ad in The New York Times and The Washington Post on Sunday calling out the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) and the Humane Society of the United States for betraying animals and kind consumers with their endorsement of Global Animal Partnership—a deceptive meat, egg, and dairy humane-washing scheme that props up the cruelty inherent in factory farming. The deceitful program allows animal-exploiting companies to slap misleading “animal welfare certified” labels on their products—even though PETA investigators have documented widespread and systemic cruelty and suffering at all 12 certified facilities they visited.

PETA’s investigation into Plainville Farms—which at the time was Global Animal Partnership–certified—documented that workers kicked, beat, and threw turkeys and left sick and injured birds to suffer without treatment. As a result of the investigation, former workers at Plainville Farms were charged with six felonies and a total of 141 counts of cruelty to animals—the largest number in any factory-farmed animal case in U.S. history—and 10 workers have been convicted so far. PETA’s investigation into Sweet Stem Farm, which was also certified by Global Animal Partnership at the time, revealed that pigs were crammed into severely crowded sheds on concrete floors and had painful, bloody rectal prolapses as large as an orange that were left untreated.

“Bragging about ‘animal welfare’ while packing tens of thousands of animals into filthy sheds, beating them, stomping on them, kicking them, and trucking them off to slaughter is a huge betrayal,” says PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman. “PETA is calling on the ASPCA and the Humane Society of the United States to stop being apologists for animal abusers and factory farms and drop their support of this bogus humane-washing scam now.”

PETA previously sent a letter to the leaders of the ASPCA, the Humane Society of the United States, and Compassion in World Farming urging them to step down from the board of directors of Global Animal Partnership. PETA is now rallying its members and supporters to petition the groups to end their support of the program. PETA points out that while the organizations’ leaders may have hoped being on the Global Animal Partnership board would provide an opportunity to improve animal welfare on factory farms, time has proved that the initiative has been a complete failure. In fact, PETA was on the board when the organization was founded but left when it became clear that the initiative was never going to reduce animal suffering. Another animal welfare group, Farm Forward, also resigned from the board.
