Halloween Spikes Demand For Self Storage Units Around America – Staten Island Is No Exception
Here are post-Halloween demand details for Staten Island, along with a quote from writer Andrei Popa:
“No magic here—Halloween is a treat for the self-storage industry! Right after Halloween, the industry sees a boost, one of the few bright spots during the usual cooldown from September through January.
Staten Island is no exception, as Halloween creates a need for locals to store seasonal decor and other “scary stuff” away from home. Our research shows a month-to-month jump in consumer interest for self-storage of roughly 4% from October to November last year, with signs of a similar trend this year. This pattern held across the NYC boroughs, with an even more pronounced effect in most cases. The Manhattan self-storage market led with a 17% increase, followed by Queens (12%), Brooklyn (11%), and The Bronx (7%).
This seasonal demand spike also brought a rise in rents in Staten Island, with street rates increasing approximately 3.1% from October to November 2023, the steepest rise among all boroughs. “
Halloween not only marks the end of October festivities, but it also serves as a break from the typical decline in demand that comes after the moving season.
While the Halloween season is boosting sales in many markets, connected industries like self-storage are also reaping some benefits of this boom.
At StorageCafe, we examined the 100 largest U.S. cities to analyze how Halloween impacts self storage trends. Using search volume and street-rate data, we identified the locations with the most significant demand increases, driven by consumers looking to store their costumes and decorations for the following year.
Here are some of the most striking insights from our study:
In November 2023, 62% of the 100 most populated cities saw a surge in self-storage-related online searches, as consumers tucked away costumes and decor.
As Halloween wraps up, Honolulu, HI, claims the top spot with a 43% increase in self-storage searches in November, the highest in the nation.
In California, Long Beach and San Francisco are leading the way with around 24% surge in self storage inquiries and a 1.3% rise in rental rates.
New Orleans, known for its elaborate Halloween celebrations, recorded 169 searches per 10k people for self-storage in November.
