Limitless Monday: Goodwill To All Men This Holiday

Limitless Monday – Goodwill to all men

In the spirit of Christmas, I was reminded of the bar hops my friends and I used to enjoy every Christmas Eve in my home town of Colchester, England.

What was noticeable during these drunken ramblings was the festive spirit of our fellow bar goers. There was rarely a fight or a cross word. Love was all around.

I recalled this festive good feeling as I walked into the office the other day and encountered two squabbling coworkers. I reminded them that it was not the time for name calling, it was a time for “goodwill to all men”. “But he’s still a dick!” one of the aggrieved parties shouted.

This week was our work Christmas party. During my working career I have attended countless Christmas parties. My first was at the tender age of 17. My four coworkers, all close to retirement age, and I, enjoyed a Christmas dinner at a quiet country pub. That was probably the tamest of all Christmas parties. My second most subdued party occurred while working in the corporate offices of a pub company in the UK. I was deliberately placed in between two teetotal senior executives whose job was to ensure I behaved myself after my drunken shenanigans from a few nights prior. When I ran my own investment business, the Christmas parties were always drunken nights of excess culminating in either a fight, or the start of a bender where I would disappear off the face of the earth for three days.

The purpose of this article is not to demonstrate my prowess in the drinking and partying department. My intention is to discuss why I believe Christmas parties are a valuable evening in your annual calendar of events.

Christmas parties are a time to reflect and celebrate. It’s also a time to make some hard decisions. I don’t want to be here this time next year being one such possible decision. From a business owner’s point of view it’s the perfect opportunity to say thank you, to boost morale, and communicate to everyone that their efforts are appreciated and valued.

At this year’s Christmas party, take a short time to reflect before you get intoxicated. Reflect on the year just gone, what would you like to have done better, what you want to achieve next year, and what you are grateful for. Raise a glass to yourself. It’s been one hell of a year! Now it’s time to party!

Happy Monday and Happy Holidays my friends!
