BP Fossella Raises Concerns Over BESS Unit Being Developed in Heart of Manor Heights
Editor’s note: We’ve previously covered now discarded plans for a BESS site installation near a local public school and a Catholic school a block away.  Legislation has been introduced to make these types of sites more difficult to install in residential neighborhoods where they can pose a fire hazard and emit toxic fumes if they do go on fire. Asm. Pirozzolo has discussed the lack of common sense in these types of proposals by the city, and BP Fossella has previously talked about a similar location to the below site in Arizona which went on fire for days, wasting millions of gallons of water.
From their Facebook post after the press conference: “Earlier today, Borough President Vito Fossella stood alongside concerned residents to address the dangers of a lithium-ion Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) being built at the corner of Manor Road and Tillman Street, which is right in the heart of a residential neighborhood.”
Staten Island, NY – Borough President Vito Fossella held a press conference to raise concerns about another lithium-ion battery storage facility being constructed in the heart of a residential neighborhood on Monday, February 10th at 11:00 AM at the corner of Manor Road and Tillman Street.
The Borough President’s call to concern comes amid recent reports that a lithium-ion Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) facility is being constructed in a vacant lot occupying the corner of Manor Road and Tillman Street.
The site is located in the heart of Manor Heights, bordering homes, several restaurants, and local businesses.
Since the beginning of the proliferation of BESS facilities in the Borough, BP Fossella has maintained that these facilities are dangerous and inappropriate in residential neighborhoods, considering the unproven technology, volatility, and high susceptibility for fire.
