Staten Islanders Who Need Backpacks For Their Kids Back-To-School, Multiple Events This Weekend

Editor’s note: Last weekend, Asm. Pirozzolo and Sen. Scarcella-Spanton each hosted family activity events that featured backpack/ school supply giveaways.  This weekend, there are two more for anyone who missed the previous events.  

The Salvation Army Stapleton community center is hosting a Back-to-School Backpack Drive to support local children and families who may be struggling to afford the essential supplies needed for the upcoming school year.

The drive will take place on August 29th at 11:00am and will be a fun-filled day focused on helping local children head back to school feeling prepared and supported. Students will receive backpacks filled with essential school supplies to help set them up for a successful year.

In addition to backpack distribution, the event will feature food, crafts, painting and even free haircuts for incoming students, creating a fun and celebratory atmosphere for local children and their families.

The below was provided by the Salvation Army Greater NY regarding the importance, especially today, of backpack drives and giveaways.  Also, note the local companies who have generously provided of their time and funds to support their local community.  Neighbors are encouraged to patronize these companies who demonstrate a clear caring spirit: 

For families across the nation, this year has brought significant financial strain, from the continued rising cost of living and extremely high gas prices to cuts to subsidized health insurance, especially at a time when many people are losing access to SNAP benefits that help them put food on the table. Staten Island is no stranger to these issues. Lt. Esther, the leader of our Stapleton Community Center, shares that this summer alone, she has seen a huge increase in families visiting the soup kitchen and Harvest of Hope Food Pantry, as well as an increase in first-time visitors.
“Now more than ever, we are seeing a tremendous increase in need throughout our community.”  Says Lt, Esther “We feel so blessed to be able to support our local families and community members and provide them with the resources they need during this challenging time.”
With budgets stretched so thin and there being so much worry about how to make ends meet and put food on the table for families with young children, things like school supplies and backpacks can become less of a priority. Which is why backpack and school supply distributions are so important for community members. They help save their already strained budgets, and kids are able to get all the things they need to start the school year feeling confident and ready.
“Leading up to the start of the school year, we’ve received so many calls from community members asking about our school supply distribution. Praise God, we’re able to provide our Stapleton community with the supplies they need to start the school year, giving parents peace of mind and the security of knowing their children have what they need to have a great start to the school year.” –  Lt. The Staten Island community is so excited to get involved in the backpack drive. Dagoberto Rosario from United Barbershop will be providing free haircuts to all students to help them feel their best for the start of school. Additionally, local community businesses have gotten involved by donating supplies, including Damascus Bread & Pastry Shop, Class Act Cuts Barbershop, and the AAPI Volunteer Program.
With good food, fun snacks and crafts such as jewelry making, painting and notebook decorating, this is not just going to be an event to help those struggling financially, but also a fun celebration to help kids celebrate the start of the school year and feel excited about the year to come.

Join us this Saturday, August 29th, from 11:00 AM to 2:00 PM at The Big Park in Mariners Harbor for our 3rd Annual Back to School Backpack Giveaway!

We’re helping our students start the school year off right with free backpacks, school supplies, free food, family fun, and a special Knicks Basketball Clinic with Knicks alumni and Jr. Knicks players.
