Editor’s note: Look out for our upcoming article on the Dinosaur sculpture, which was created by an artist working with the City.  The sculpture will be on display until 2026, and we interviewed PETA’s expert on pigeons about how amazing pigeons are.  Not only do they have families, mate for life, and make excellent parents, but they have “served” in World Wars.  One truly famous and helpful pigeon was honored with a Medal Of Honor by the French government for his assistance in World War I. Look out for that story publishing in the next few weeks!  Curtis Sliwa, the founder of the Guardian Angels, has also advocated for pigeons, going so far as to suggest people should give pigeons water during a drought.

PETA’s new message to NYC is coming from a bird’s eye view—both literally and figuratively! Reminding New Yorkers that the city isn’t just for humans, an ad with the tagline “It Ain’t Just MANhattan. I’m a New Yorker, too. Give Me Respect” has been placed in Times Square to honor some of our most unfairly treated neighbors—pigeons.

“Pigeons are naturally curious and friendly animals, and like humans, they don’t want to be harassed on the streets, trapped, or killed,” says PETA Senior Vice President Colleen O’Brien. “PETA urges everyone to take a bird’s eye view of pigeons and understand they’re no different from other New Yorkers surviving and thriving in the city, and they deserve respect.”
Most pigeons in New York today are descended from birds who arrived alongside human settlers hundreds of years ago. They have complex inner lives and powerful navigational abilities; can identify individual humans by their facial features; and are able to recognize patterns and predict the best solution to a given problem. PETA urges everyone to refrain from bullying or maligning pigeons and using harmful bird-repellant sticky caulk that can trap or poison them. Instead, building owners can respectfully encourage pigeons to move on by making simple building modifications, such as angled ledges.
