In The Bronx, Foliage Planting Along Grand Concourse Brings Beauty To Area During NYCxDesign Festival

Editor’s note: Staten Island leads the way in new tree growth across the five boroughs, according to researchers from Columbia University in NYC. Recently, bee bunkers, bee hotels, and other native insect attracting native plants and shrubs were planted in Manhattan, in  order to encourage more bees to be pass through the area and pollinate surrounding areas as well.  The Heritage Foundation also recently reported that some species may actually be more resilient and able to withstand the effects of climate change than previously believed.  Since these plantings are of native plants, even if they are not productive (in terms of berries and fruits), they should still support the native insect life that relies on native plants in order to thrive.

NYC DOT HOSTS MEDIA AVAILABILITY DURING FOLIAGE PLANTING ALONG GRAND CONCOURSE, PART OF NYCxDESIGN FESTIVAL

NEW YORK – New York City Department of Transportation (NYC DOT) hosted an event as part of the NYCxDESIGN Festival on Thursday, May 15, and held media availability at noon along the Grand Concourse in the Bronx. This year’s event is titled Green Corridors in Action: Planting the Grand Concourse and focuses on environmental stewardship and community engagement.

The event includes a planting-in-action volunteer day in the landscaped green spaces along the Grand Concourse, where neighborhood volunteers will use native plants provided by the Greenbelt Native Plant Center to greenify and beautify the community. Simultaneously, guided walking tours of the boulevard and Grand Concourse historic district will be held by expert horticulturist and urbanists from the Municipal Art Society. Participants can also visit the thought-provoking exhibition at The Bronx Museum entitled “Working Knowledge: Shared Imaginings, New Futures” which seeks to create resources and drive positive change at a grassroots level by inviting visitors to interact with artist-designed tools and systems that foster community building, cultural exchange, and creative problem-solving.

About the Grand Concourse

The distinguished Grand Concourse stretches more than four miles through the Bronx, from East 138th Street to Mosholu Parkway consisting of a central roadway, service roads, submerged transverse streets and landscaped malls. Constructed from 1897 to 1909, the boulevard was designed by Louis Aloys Risse, a French-born immigrant who drew inspiration from the world-renowned Champs-Élysées in Paris, Olmsted and Vaux’s design for Central Park, and Eastern and Ocean parkways in Brooklyn. Green Corridors in Action: Planting the Grand Concourse is part of the NYCxDESIGN Festival, an annual citywide celebration featuring hundreds of design events, from exhibits and trade shows to talks and tours, drawing hundreds of thousands of attendees from near and far.
