Staten Island, NYC Branches Of NYPL To Have New Sunday Hours

Editor’s note: We previously covered the full restoration of service and Sunday hours at several library branches across the city.  The Library also suffered budget cuts and ensuing service reductions the November prior. New Yorkers rallied behind their libraries, which residents overwhelmingly support, causing their funding to be restored. St. George Library will now newly be opened in Sunday due to New Yorkers making their voices heard.

Five New NYPL Locations to Add Sunday Hours

Beginning on Sunday, September 7, five additional New York Public Library branches will open on Sundays and offer seven-day service. This brings the total number of NYPL locations open every day of the week to 12.

This expansion of seven-day service is a result of increased investment by the City in the new FY26 budget, which included $30.7 million in increased and ongoing operating funding for public libraries, and $2 million specifically to expand seven-day service across all five boroughs.

After staving off deep cuts in past years, NYC’s public libraries have been facing rising costs due to the growing needs of New Yorkers and inflation. Library funding had essentially remained flat over these years—and increased investment was critical to ensure New Yorkers have consistent, reliable access to the essential services libraries provide.

The investment in the budget and this expansion of seven-day service is a testament to how essential public libraries are to their communities—and the deep support of New Yorkers across the city who signed letters and made their voices heard. NYPL is grateful to Mayor Eric Adams, Speaker Adrienne Adams, and the entire City Council for investing in libraries.
