Staten Island’s Rep. Presented With Signatures To Encourage Her To Continue Leading In Congress For Alzheimer’s Patients, Families, Caregivers

Editor’s note: We have covered many topics related to Alzheimer’s Disease, a condition which unfortunately affects many Staten Islanders while they age.  This debilitating condition eventually leads to death, as there is no cure, and eventually the disease causes minor functions to become difficult or impossible (such as swallowing – which everyone takes from granted). Senator Gillibrand introduced a pathway to faster approval for medications to combat this illness. Senator Sanders called for presidential action to lower the cost of prescription drugs to treat this condition, paving the way for more people to have access to them.  Rep. Malliotakis has been an ally of this community, including by recently introducing language to decrease prescription drug prices and expand telehealth services for more conditions and patients.

The below article emphasizes the urgent local impact—9,200 residents aged 65+ in Richmond County are living with an Alzheimer’s diagnosis—as well as the bipartisan importance of this issue. As a member of the Problem Solvers Caucus and a cosponsor of the Credit for Caring Act, Congresswoman Malliotakis is well-positioned to continue being a champion for caregivers, NIH research funding, and BOLD initiative support:

I recently met with Rep. Nicole Malliotakis’ district director to deliver 187 signatures collected from Staten Island residents who, like me, deeply care about continued congressional leadership in the fight against Alzheimer’s disease.

We discussed the fact that 9,200 people aged 65 and older in Richmond County are currently living with an Alzheimer’s diagnosis (2023 statistic) and exponentially more people are caring for someone with Alzheimer’s or dementia. Alzheimer’s impacts us all, regardless of political affiliation.

As a member of the Problem Solvers Caucus, a group committed to finding bipartisan solutions, the Congresswoman’s voice is powerful in Congress. She is a cosponsor of the Credit for Caring Act, which shows meaningful support for the challenges faced by caregivers. I hope she will continue championing our cause by advocating for increased funding for Alzheimer’s research at NIH and continued support for the BOLD initiative, which funds Alzheimer’s awareness programs and which both New York City and New York State have already benefited from. Please join me in urging Congresswoman Malliotakis to raise her voice in support of the continued fight against Alzheimer’s!
