NYC Needs Real Reform – Eliminate Waste, Corruption; Shooting Of NYPD Officer Unacceptable: Mayoral Candidate Curtis Sliwa
Editor’s note: We’ve previously covered Curtis Sliwa’s rescue of multiple cats at a former NYCHA location. As part of the Protect Animals party in running for mayor, he has declared his intent to increase the number of shelters in the city, as well as making more of them no-kill shelters. He also joined the call for an end to horse drawn carriages in NYC. You can see the full text of Curtis Sliwa’s comments during the public comment session here.
Curtis Sliwa Unveils Bold Plan to Eliminate Waste, Corruption, and Inefficiency in NYC Government:
Restoring Integrity and Accountability to City Hall
New York, NY – NYC mayoral candidate Curtis Sliwa today announced a comprehensive reform agenda to transform City Hall into an efficient, transparent, and results-driven operation that serves New Yorkers, not political insiders. Under a Sliwa administration, government bloat will be slashed, accountability enforced, and core services prioritized to deliver real results for taxpayers.
“New Yorkers are sick of the status quo: corruption at City Hall, disgraceful resignations, sexual harassment scandals, and politicians who play politics with the lives of everyday people,” said Sliwa. “We’ve watched governors abuse power, shut down corruption probes, resign in disgrace, and mayors whose cronies end up in handcuffs or trying to bribe reporters with cash in potato chip bags. That is the broken political class. New York City’s government is bloated, wasteful, and driven by politics over performance. I’ll rebuild it to serve the people efficiently and transparently—no more piggy bank for donors or parking lot for patronage jobs.”
Key elements of Sliwa’s plan include:
Reforming the Mayor’s Office of Operations: Transforming it into a powerful watchdog to conduct deep audits, expose corruption, eliminate redundant programs, and end automatic contract renewals.
A new Deputy Mayor for Government Efficiency will lead the effort, using executive powers to cut red tape and ensure follow-through on complaints and service requests.
Fixing 311, 911, and Agency Accountability: Launching a weekly 311 Accountability Dashboard, requiring proof of resolution for complaints, and auditing response delays to hold agency heads responsible. Sliwa will also improve 911 coordination across NYPD, FDNY, and EMS.
Full-Scale Audit of City Agencies: Ordering forensic audits to root out waste and mismanagement, with real-time public spending transparency via an online portal tracking contracts and grants.
Ending Pay-to-Play Corruption: Implementing strict vetting for lobbyists and donors, enforcing anti-nepotism laws, cutting funding to ineffective nonprofits, and bolstering the Department of Investigation to target systemic corruption.
Eliminating Bureaucratic Bloat: Cutting unnecessary positions, reducing deputy mayors and consultants, and consolidating agencies to refocus on core services like policing, fire, EMS, sanitation, and infrastructure.
“New Yorkers don’t want apps or slogans—they want a government that answers the phone, shows up, and gets it done,” Sliwa added. “The contrast could not be clearer. I have spent my life serving New Yorkers, fighting for them when no one else would. I am running to be a People’s Mayor, a voice for the people, not the insiders.”
Curtis Sliwa, founder of the Guardian Angels and lifelong advocate for safer streets, is running for mayor on the Republican and Independent line to bring commonsense reforms to NYC.

Curtis Sliwa Condemns Shooting of NYPD Detective by Friendly Fire During Confrontation with Career Criminal
Demands End to Pro-Criminal Policies Fueling NYC Violence
New York, NY – NYC mayoral candidate Curtis Sliwa issued a statement on X following the shooting of an NYPD narcotics detective in Whitestone, Queens, who was wounded in the arm and leg by friendly fire while responding to an attempted carjacking and robbery spree by a 28-year-old career criminal with nearly a dozen prior arrests and four convictions, including assaults on officers and robbery.
The suspect, who had attempted to rob two other individuals earlier that morning and assaulted an Uber driver while announcing a robbery, was in custody after the incident near 143-01 22nd Road.
Mayor Eric Adams noted that the suspect should have been in jail due to his extensive criminal history.
“This is yet another tragic example of our brave officers putting their lives on the line to protect New Yorkers, only to be endangered by failed policies that allow repeat offenders to roam free,” said Sliwa.
“This career criminal never should have been on our streets – with a record including assaults on police and robberies, he was a ticking time bomb,” Sliwa continued. “Our officers don the uniform and vest every day to shield us, but our government refuses to shield them. Radicals like Zohran Mamdani want to weaken law enforcement further and push pro-criminal agendas that complete the disastrous work started by Andrew Cuomo’s laws, resulting in demoralized, understaffed NYPD ranks and a city spiraling into crisis.”
As Mayor, Sliwa vows to implement a comprehensive long-term plan to reduce crime and restore order to New York City. Key elements include:
* Hiring 7,000 new NYPD officers to bolster depleted ranks.
* Reinstating the Anti-Crime Unit and expanding the Gang Unit to target violent threats proactively.
* Reforming or repealing failed laws that fuel violence and enable repeat offenders.
* Ending the cycle of catch-and-release for violent criminals by holding them accountable.
* Bringing back the Homeless Outreach Unit to address root causes of street disorder.
* Expanding transit safety measures to ensure New Yorkers feel secure in subways and on streets.
“New York doesn’t need more excuses or empty promises – we need decisive action, real accountability, and strong leadership,” Sliwa added. “That’s why I’m running: to make our city safe again for families, businesses, and our heroic first responders.”
