TRICK-OR-STREETS: NYC DOT TO CELEBRATE HALLOWEEN WITH 148 PEDESTRIANIZED LOCATIONS ACROSS THE CITY

New York City’s Fourth Annual ‘Trick-Or-Streets’ Brings Festive Car-Free Celebrations to Open Streets and Plazas Across the City

An online interactive map highlights every location.

NEW YORK – New York City Department of Transportation (NYC DOT) Commissioner Ydanis Rodriguez today announced the city’s annual Halloween and Harvest-themed celebration, Trick-or-Streets, will return for a fourth year on Open Streets, pedestrian plazas, and other corridors throughout the city this October, with 148 car-free events planned through the month. The initiative will help children enjoy the holiday and allow New Yorkers to safely utilize our collective front yards – our streets.  For a map of each location, visit nyc.gov/trickorstreets.

“With more children expected out on our streets for Halloween, Trick-or-Streets provides a safe way for families to enjoy the holiday and connect with their neighbors,” said NYC DOT Commissioner Ydanis Rodriguez. “Trick-or-Streets is just one example of how the Open Streets program inspires New Yorkers to rethink how our streets can strengthen our communities.”

Part of the city’s Open Streets, Plaza, and Public Realm programming initiatives, Trick-or-Streets allows groups of residents, community organizations, institutions, and other neighborhood associations to create car-free streets for New Yorkers to safely participate in Halloween activities. At Trick or Streets locations, New Yorkers can expect festive programming, performances, arts and crafts, fitness classes, giveaways, and more.

In celebration of Trick-or-Streets and ‘Biketober’ NYC DOT has teamed up with the 34th Avenue Open Street Coalition and the 31st Avenue Open Street Collective to lead a kid-friendly guided bike ride with integrated festive programming by Lina Liu Artist Group and TAPE ART NYC. To join the guided ride, register online.

*Please note: Events are subject to delay or cancellation due to weather.

Trick-or-Streets attendees enjoy kid’s activities on Castleton Avenue on Staten Island.

Throughout the month of October, signature events across the five boroughs New York have brought streets to life with Halloween and Harvest-themed fun. The first of five large-scale Signature events took place on Castleton Avenue in Staten Island on Saturday, October 18th in collaboration with the Staten Island Business Outreach Center and the Castleton Avenue Merchants Organization. The event was produced by NYC Kidsfest with programming for people of all ages and abilities. Highlights included pumpkin patch photo opportunities and giveaways, facepainting, games, and live musical performances from local artists,

The Open Streets program has led to the redesign city streets to create permanent, new pedestrian space. Since 2022, NYC DOT has pedestrianized more than one million square feet of space across the five boroughs – improving street safety and providing places for friends and neighbors to congregate and build community.

KEEP CHILDREN SAFE THIS HALLOWEEN: ADMINISTRATION FOR CHILDREN’S SERVICES AND AMERICAN RED CROSS SHARE IMPORTANT HALLOWEEN SAFETY TIPS
Ahead of Halloween, the NYC Administration for Children’s Services (ACS) and the American Red Cross in Greater New York shared important tips to ensure New York City children have a safe (and fun) Halloween.
“Parents and caregivers can help make Halloween safe and fun for children by following a few safety tips, like making sure kids don’t go trick-or-treating without an adult, looking both ways before crossing the street, and having an adult check their bags before they eat their treats,” said Commissioner Jess Dannhauser, Administration for Children’s Services. “ACS thanks the American Red Cross for teaming up to get this valuable message out.”
“Halloween is a time of excitement and imagination for children across New York City, and we want to ensure it’s also a safe one,” said Doreen Thomann Howe, CEO of the American Red Cross in Greater New York. “Whether families are trick-or-treating, attending community events, or celebrating at home, simple precautions—like staying visible, traveling in groups, and checking treats—can make all the difference. We’re proud to partner with NYC ACS to help families enjoy a fun and safe Halloween.”
