Staten Islanders: This Sunday At JCC – “Mobile Museum of Tolerance” Arrives, Provides Tools To Students, Educators To Combat Hate, Prejudice While Increasing Empathy, Respect, Inclusivity

Editor’s note: Readers may remember our coverage of the traveling exhibit at the Alice Austen House; which showed the evolution of voting rights in America, from landowners to women to former Slaves and others.  

All are welcome to attend and experience the history of acceptance and tolerance and why it’s so important to understand.  History is usually fraught with contradictions, including times of great intolerance – such as the Jim Crow era, a time when the gains of Reconstruction were systematically dismantled by a racist president who followed the anti-racist president whose assassination brought the unelected Andrew Johnson into the presidency, who allowed restrictive rules against integration and equal rights, after which real change happened, which was then undone by the Jim Crow era, after which the Civil Rights movement brought equality to the fore again. Such a convoluted history is not unusual, and especially so for a democratic republic with such quickly changing politicians in charge.  

This Sunday, the  Mobile Museum of Tolerance (MMOT) will be traveling to the Staten Island JCC to attend its annual End of Summer Blast, introducing the MMOT’s educational programming to local families through a gallery experience, crafts, and story time centered on kindness and respect.

The MMOT is an innovative classroom on wheels focused on bringing facilitator-led educational workshops directly to schools and communities across the country, including New York City.

Mobile Museum of Tolerance Joins Staten Island’s End of Summer Blast

The Mobile Museum of Tolerance (MMOT) will host an open house at the Staten Island JCC’s annual End of Summer Blast, inviting families to step inside the mobile museum for an introduction to the MMOT’s mission and educational programming.

Designed with families in mind, the MMOT Open House will feature a gallery experience inside and child-friendly activities outside, including crafts and story time centered on inclusion, kindness, and respect.

The Mobile Museum of Tolerance, a national educational initiative of the Museum of Tolerance in Los Angeles, is an innovative classroom on wheels that brings facilitator-led workshops designed to combat hate and promote tolerance directly to schools and communities across the country. At a time of increasing division, using the lessons of history to teach tolerance is more urgent than ever.

Amid growing concerns about hate, prejudice, and misinformation nationwide, educators and communities are seeking meaningful ways to help students examine history and understand its impact on the world they live in today.

The Mobile Museum of Tolerance supports these efforts by offering innovative, immersive experiences that bring history to life, from the Civil Rights era to present-day challenges facing young people, while delivering this learning experience directly to educational settings through immersive programming and facilitated dialogue, equipping educators with practical tools to address bias, foster inclusive classrooms, and encourage critical reflection.

By connecting historical lessons to present-day challenges facing young people, the MMOT’s workshops support active participation and reflection, helping educators and students confront intolerance, strengthen empathy, and play a role in building more respectful and inclusive communities.
