BP Fossella, DA McMahon & NYPD to Update Public on Concerning Burglary Pattern & Share Safety Measures to Protect Personal Property & Residences
Editor’s note: The pattern of robberies discussed appears to usually involve a crowbar, which is used to attempt to open doors, windows, and sometimes car doors, all with the apparent end goal of finding the key fob for the vehicle the perpetrators want to steal. This situation has occurred about ten times since they’ve been tracking the pattern. The group of thieves has been nicknamed the Crowbar Crew since this is such an integral part of their operation. This is similar to a pattern of robberies seen last year in the City of Rahway.
Staten Island, NY – Borough President Vito Fossella, District Attorney Michael McMahon, and NYPD Patrol Borough Staten Island Chief Melissa Eger update the public on a concerning burglary pattern perpetrated across the borough and issue a call for Staten Islanders to be vigilant and conscientious of their personal property at a press conference at the 121st Precinct on Thursday, February 12th at 3:00 PM.
Despite Staten Island recording a 14% decline in grand larceny autos, a 69% decline in burglaries, and an eight percent decline in overall index crimes so far this year, a recent burglary pattern in Todt Hill and Dongan Hills, involving several forced home entries and thefts of personal vehicles, as well as an attempted GLA in Arden Heights, have caused concern for law enforcement officials and residents alike.
In addition to offering an update on the recent burglary pattern, Borough Commander Eger, Borough President Fossella, and District Attorney McMahon will issue a public call for all residents to be conscientious of their personal vehicles – including locking their car doors, keeping their keys in a safe location, removing personal valuables from vehicles, and being present when warming up vehicles, among other strategies.
