Limitless Monday – Quotations to live by

A few years back, while imprisoned in a hell hole in Morocco, I would write in big letters on the wall of the cell my favorite motivational quotations. I carved these words into the wall facing me so I would be reminded of their wisdom and inspiration when I awoke each morning.

My fellow Arab inmates sharing the room with me looked at me in disgust as I defaced the wall. The phrase, “Seize the Day!” obviously offended them in some way.

Perhaps they considered themselves guardians of the jail or maybe they expected me to act like them, depressed and zombie-like. On one occasion a guard entered our cell and walked towards my bunk. He stood over me observing my work of art for a few seconds before saying in broken English, “Do not write on my wall!”

I ignored him. When he left the cell I wrote in even bigger letters, “This moment is not my final chapter”, on the wall to my right. I wanted no reprieve from the positivity I tried to surround myself with as I knew soul sapping negativity was only a glance away.

There was still room for one more quotation on that long expanse of wall, f*ck that jailer! I thought. “My future is bigger than this place,” I wrote.

I had an office once where I would hang motivational quotations on every wall. That was probably the catalyst for my idea as I languished in that hot crowded cell.

Here are a few quotations I hung on my office walls:

“Your time is limited, so don’t waste it living someone else’s life.”

“Stay Hungry. Stay Foolish.”

“The best dreams happen when you’re awake.”

Here is a quotation I read recently that resonated with me. It’s not one I would have scribbled on the wall of my cell, but it certainly has its place in a world of divided opinions and people constantly trying to force their half-baked ideas down everyone else’s throat. “A bee does not waste its energy trying to convince a fly than honey tastes better than sh*t”.

Here is another quotation I have a fondness for, courtesy of my girlfriend, “Don’t start none, won’t be none”.

And another which resonates with me, “D.F.Q. – Don’t F*cking Quit.”

On the back of my cell phone, I keep a handwritten note to remind myself: “Something wonderful is going to happen today!”

Write one of your favorite quotations somewhere you will see it every day, something that fills you with inspiration and reminds you of what’s possible.

Happy Monday!
