Richmond County District Attorney McMahon, Borough President Fossella, Notre Dame Club of Staten Island & Local Students Team Up to Kick Off the 35th Annual Bread of Life Food Drive

Editor’s note: Back in 2024, the food drive’s goal was to collect 60,000 food items from local partner schools to deliver to local pantries whose holiday season donations have in many instances run out.  Pantries rely on donations from community members, who often only think of it when the holiday season is approaching.  However, the need doesn’t end after the new year begins, and in some cases it can even become more pressing.  With gas prices rising at a staggering rate, the costs of food soaring, and everyday electronic items going up in cost, it has become even more difficult for struggling families to make ends meet.  Readers may remember our coverage of ALICE families, the heads of which households often work over 40 hours a week, and are still unable to pay for all of their necessities, especially when they also have children and other caretaking responsibilities.

Staten Island, NY – District Attorney Michael E. McMahon and Borough President Fossella announced their partnership with the Notre Dame Bread of Life Food Drive on Thursday, March 12th at 2:30PM at Borough Hall.

For the fifth consecutive year, Bread of Life is using the slogan “Fight Hunger, Not Each Other”, urging our borough’s students to lead and participate in the annual drive to fight food insecurity across Staten Island while also promoting peace and making our community safer in the process. On March 28th, the food collected will be delivered to over 25 not-for-profit organizations on Staten Island.

From the Notre Dame website about the event:

BREAD OF LIFE DRIVE (BOLD)

The Bread of Life Drive (BOLD) is an annual food drive organized by the Notre Dame Club of Staten Island. Food collected benefits non-profit organizations in Staten Island and Brooklyn. The drive takes places in the early spring to help bridge the long gap between holiday food drives. The Staten Island Club organized the first BOLD in 1992. Each year, BOLD collects over 55,000 food items. To learn more, watch this video about BOLD’s history and impact.

The 2026 Bread of Life Food Drive will take place March 16-28, 2026. Distribution of food to recipient organizations is scheduled for Saturday March 28 at Msgr. Farrell High School from 7am-noon.

From the Borough President’s post:

Borough President Vito Fossella was joined by District Attorney Michael McMahon and students from across Staten Island schools to announce the 35th annual Notre Dame Club of Staten Island BOLD Bread of Life Drive.
The Bread Of Life Food Drive works with more than 100 borough public and private schools with “Fight Hunger, Not Each Other” as the continuing catchphrase.
Since its inception, the Bread of Life Food Drive has collected and distributed more than two million non-perishable food items to 25 non-profit organizations on Staten Island.
“You come together to make things better,” said Borough President Fossella during a press conference yesterday in Borough Hall.
Rev. Terry Troia, executive director of Project Hospitality, one of the recipient organizations, shared a story of a phone call she received from the principal of a fourth-grade student who was so hungry she ate an entire piece of Easter candy, wrapper included.
She visited the student’s home and found less than a quart of milk in the refrigerator and a single bag of potato chips in the cupboard as their sole source of food. Her mother also had a 10-month-old baby and was pregnant.
“These are the kinds of situations that require the food that you are collecting,” she said. “What you do is fill those cupboards and refrigerators. You are saving that fourth-grader from having to eat that wrapper and that is very powerful.”
The participating schools will collect food throughout the rest of the month. The food will then be boxed at Monsignor Farrell High School on March 28 and delivered to the recipient organizations.
“It’s just an inspiring response from all the schools,” said Bread of Life Executive Director Joseph Delaney.
