From Iceland to Asgard: Finding Thor in the Land of Fire and Ice

This past week I was in Iceland with my family, and it got me thinking: Which Marvel character is most closely associated with Iceland?

Since the Norse people helped colonize this once largely unoccupied island centuries ago, it only made sense that the answer would be Thor, the God of Thunder. Sure enough, throughout our trip we spotted murals celebrating Thor, references to Norse mythology, and even discovered that Iceland has an entire region named in his honor.

Nestled deep within Iceland’s breathtaking highlands is Þórsmörk (pronounced “Thorsmork”), which translates to “Thor’s Valley.” Surrounded by glaciers, volcanic mountains, rushing rivers, and some of the most spectacular hiking trails anywhere in the world, Þórsmörk feels like the kind of place where you could genuinely imagine the God of Thunder standing atop a mountain with Mjolnir in hand.

Long before Marvel Comics introduced readers to Thor in Journey into Mystery in 1962, the character had been one of the most important figures in Norse mythology for over a thousand years. Thor wasn’t just the god of thunder—he represented strength, protection, courage, and the defense of ordinary people against giants and monsters. Stan Lee, Larry Lieber, and Jack Kirby took those legendary stories and transformed Thor into one of Marvel’s greatest superheroes, while still honoring many of the myths that inspired him.

Walking through Iceland, it’s easy to understand why those ancient stories were born here. The landscape is unlike anywhere else on Earth. Massive waterfalls thunder over cliffs, volcanoes reshape the land, black sand beaches stretch for miles, and glaciers seem to touch the clouds. Nature itself feels larger than life. It’s the perfect setting for tales of gods, giants, and mythical battles.

What impressed me most was how naturally Iceland embraces its Viking heritage. Rather than treating Norse mythology as something confined to history books, it’s woven into everyday life through place names, artwork, museums, and storytelling. You don’t have to be a comic book fan to appreciate it—but if you are, it adds another layer to the experience.

As comic book collectors, we often think of Thor through the pages of Marvel Comics or the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Visiting Iceland reminded me that behind every great superhero is often an even older story that has inspired generations of storytellers.

Sometimes the best part of traveling isn’t just seeing famous landmarks—it’s discovering how history, mythology, and even comic books intersect in unexpected ways. Standing in Thor’s Valley, surrounded by some of the most beautiful scenery I’ve ever seen, I couldn’t help but think that if there were ever a place worthy of the God of Thunder, this would be it.

Whether you’re a fan of Marvel, Norse mythology, or simply incredible travel destinations, Iceland offers a chance to experience the real-world inspiration behind one of comics’ most enduring heroes. And after seeing it for myself, I have to say—it was well worth the journey.
