Every once in a while, something comes along that immediately stands out as a genuine comic book event.This is one of those stories.

For decades, fans have wondered what would happen if the heroes and villains of Marvel Comics came face-to-face with the characters from Star Wars. Now, that question is finally getting an answer.

To celebrate the 50th anniversary of Star Wars, Marvel Comics and Lucasfilm Publishing have announced Star Wars/Marvel: Hope Assembles, a five-issue limited series scheduled to launch in January 2027.

And yes — Spider-Man is going to meet Luke Skywalker.

A Galaxy Far, Far Away Meets the Marvel Universe

Written by pop-culture icon Kevin Smith and illustrated by acclaimed artist David Marquez, Hope Assembles will bring characters from the two franchises together in a way that has never happened before in an official Marvel comic.

On one side, you’ll have some of Marvel’s biggest heroes, including Spider-Man and the Avengers.

On the other, you’ll have Luke Skywalker, Princess Leia, Han Solo and Chewbacca.

And if that’s not enough, the villains are getting in on the action too.

Doctor Doom will apparently find himself allied with Darth Vader and the Galactic Empire.

Just typing that sentence feels like something comic book fans have been waiting decades to see.

Imagine Doctor Doom and Darth Vader standing in the same room.

Who talks first?

Who tries to take control?

And how long before Doom decides he would rather rule the Empire himself?

Those are exactly the kinds of questions that make this crossover so exciting.

The Story Has a Clever Marvel Connection

There is actually a fascinating explanation for how this crossover can happen.

Marvel has long referred to its primary continuity as the “World Outside Your Window.” And according to the premise of Hope Assembles, Star Wars has always existed on Earth-616.

The story begins when a reality-shattering spell causes the Marvel heroes to witness the events of Star Wars: A New Hope unfolding on Earth.

That creates an opportunity for the two worlds to finally collide.

Rather than simply dropping Spider-Man into a galaxy far, far away, the story appears to be asking a much bigger question:

What if the Marvel Universe had been watching the events of the original Star Wars movie happen all along?

That gives the crossover a particularly fun connection to Marvel’s long history of breaking down the walls between fictional realities.

Smith has openly talked about growing up reading Marvel’s Star Wars comics and wishing that characters such as Spider-Man or Doctor Doom could somehow cross paths with the Star Wars characters.

Now he gets to write that story.

As Smith put it, when the opportunity came along, nobody needed to “Force” his hand.

For longtime comic book fans, that’s exactly the kind of full-circle moment that makes this project special.

The Artwork Is Another Big Reason to Watch

Kevin Smith’s involvement is certainly getting the headlines, but David Marquez is a major part of what makes this project worth watching.

Marquez has become one of Marvel’s most recognizable modern artists, and his clean, dynamic style should be a great fit for a story that needs to balance characters from two completely different visual worlds.

Seeing him draw characters like Spider-Man, Doctor Doom, Luke Skywalker and Darth Vader in the same story could be reason enough to pick up the first issue.

And for collectors, there’s another reason to pay attention.

The variant covers.

As we’ve seen with other major Marvel events, Hope Assembles is expected to have a number of different covers, making this a potentially significant release for collectors.
