NYC Journalist Interviews Actor Dustin Murray On Inspirations For Role In “Sunny Yard,” Lessons From Life, Comedy Sportz, Wrestling Experiences, More

Cindy Mich sat down with actor Dustin Murray, who played the villain in a new independent film, Sunny Yard.  This is not in wide distribution, and if you want to see it, you can check out the calendar on their official site to find the latest theaters and showtimes. When he’s not acting or working at his store, Dustin also participates in something called comedy sportz, which is kind of what it sounds like: a comedy improv setup with sports games as the props and actors improvising lines, movements, placement, music, and everything else they can push on to get laughs out of the live audience.  It sounds like it’s a lot of fun, both for the participating actors and the audience.  

Dustin talked about how his childhood exposure to a junkyard at a young age made the set of Sunny Yard very familiar and kind of like home.  He lived in a house attached to one while growing up and played among the car parts and other scattered metal items. 

He also talked about what it was like to be the villain.  He discussed how he was a little like the character while he was growing up, but he also had a sister who was dating someone who was kind of like a real life jerk. That personality template helped Dustin to get into character for the film, which was also a heavily improv movie. No lines, no scripts, no ‘stand here, do that,’ etc. For those unfamiliar with improv, the Larry David Show is also all improvised. Most actors find it greatly challenging to do this, but to some it comes naturally.  Dustin was the latter.  

He shares some of the lessons he’s learned being an actor and walking into someone else’s vision to help them make it come to fruition. Acting is clearly his passion, but you can meet him at the grocery store he owns in the City, too. So he’s a real life person with a real story and interesting perspective to share.
