Editor’s note; Staten Islanders may remember last year’s film festival, which aspired to become an annual event. The films are usually related to a changing world affected by climate change, migration, and uncertainty.
On October 3rd, Staten Island’s National Lighthouse Museum hosted the Better Planet Film Festival, a Climate Week NYC film festival, ironically rescheduled due to a Climate event, the Nor’easter that hit on September 26th. The Better Planet Film Festival by Build A Better Planet featured Climate Films by independent filmmakers, including New York students, iike “The River 2” by Matthew Fox and “Green Oasis” by Jada Staten.
Attendees received gourmet Parisian chocolates by La Maison du Chocolat and cocktails courtesy of the Fort Hamilton Distillery, a family-owned, New York distillery.
On October 4th, the National Lighthouse Museum screened select Indie Films during their annual Point Fest event, which featured a soup competition that was perfect for the rainy weather. The museum’s youngest patrons screened “SOS Poseidon”, a children’s film about environmental factors affecting our oceans.
Later, the museum screened the Dutch Film, “The Last Farm of Amsterdam”, featuring the Sailors for Sustainability who were involved in the farm project to save Amsterdam’s last urban farm.
The Sailors for Sustainability, Floris van Hees and Ivar Smits, are in New York this weekend for the release of the English edition of their book, “Changing Course”, a collection of accounts of sustainable projects from around the world from the Sailors’ 8+ years at sea.
The Sailors for Sustainability are giving a free talk and walk on October 10th, on Governors Island at 11 am. For more information about the event, go to: https://luma.com/6o25u4ez
