Crime Victims’ Rights Bill Introduced By Sen. Scarcella-Spanton Passes NYS Senate
SENATOR SCARCELLA-SPANTON’S VICTIM’S RIGHTS BILL PASSES THE SENATE
ALBANY, NY – Senator Scarcella-Spanton’s victim’s rights legislation passed the Senate. The bill amends the executive law, specifically regarding notifications and the rights of crime victims. Senate Bill S5502 requires sentencing judges or district attorneys to provide victims of a crime involving state prison time with an informational sheet outlining their rights.
This bill is one piece of a comprehensive package of legislation aimed at strengthening the rights of victims of domestic and sexual violence, and providing increased protections for survivors. The package builds on the recent successes of the Senate Majority in the 2023-2034 budget, which allocated $13 million for state victim and witness assistance, $5 million in grants for assistance to survivors and victims of domestic violence, and $4.5 million for rape crisis centers.
Senator Scarcella-Spanton emphasized the need for ongoing efforts to protect and support victims of crime– “Victims of crime deserve to know their rights and have access to resources and support. This bill is one way we can support and protect victims here in New York State” said Senator Scarcella-Spanton
Senator Scarcella-Spanton was appointed as Chair of the New York State Senate Committee on Veterans, Homeland Security and Military Affairs, and is a member of the Committees on Civil Service and Pensions, Cultural Affairs, Tourism, Parks and Recreation Disabilities, Insurance, Labor, and Women’s Issues.
