Limitless Monday – Why consistency matters

One of the key elements of succeeding in anything is consistency. On a macro level consistency leads to a fulfilling high performing life. On a micro level it ensures you achieve your short term goals.

There are many threats to consistency. Apathy being one of them. One such threat is the intervention or pressure from outside sources, such as your job, finances, or romantic partner.

In reality, these outside pressures are internal; you make the final decision whether you listen to them.

I have met so many people in my life who, because of work commitments, financial constraints, or pressure from their partner dropped out of something they once held close to their heart. Whether that was going to the gym, training in martial arts, or starting a business. The reality is, they were weak. It doesn’t mean they can’t learn from that weakness in the future. In fact, in some cases, these ill-judged decisions can provide a catalyst for them to be relentlessly consistent at some point in the future.

Consistency in this regard is the act of doing something towards your goal every day.

When your girlfriend or boyfriend complains that you’re not spending enough quality time together, don’t rush to compromise your goals. The actions you take each day to achieve those goals are likely to stay with you far longer than any relationship. When your partner insists you should cut out a couple of days of training so you can sit on the couch and watch one of her favorite sitcoms or go to church, dismiss the idea out of hand before he or she gets her hooks into your dreams and brings you down to your knees.

Obviously, if you are married and have kids, there are some compromises which are necessary, as you have an obligation and a commitment to make your loved ones happy. But if you are in your formative years striving for big goals, then achieving consistency in whatever you choose to do is essential.

If you’re the type of person who sets a goal but only works towards it sporadically, I can guarantee you it is unlikely you will ever reach that goal. You are what is called a flip-flop. No one likes a flip-flop apart from other flip-flops. And who wants to hang around with flip-flops?

On the other hand, if you’re the kind of person who still puts in work toward your goal even with a hangover, a migraine, or a broken body, you’re on your way to greatness. That level of grit is in all of us, if you choose to unleash it.

Happy Monday!
