The 43rd Anniversary Celebration was held yesterday. The event started at 10am sharp outside the Junior Guardian Angels location in Washington Heights. This was followed by a dinner at Angelica’s Uptown Restaurant in Washington Heights from 12-3:30. The Guardian Angels grew from a small group of 13 members in 1979, to a worldwide organization that “created chapters in over 130 cities in 13 countries to protect their communities and improve substantially the quality of life,” according to the Guardian Angels website.
According to the Angels, “Guardian Angels are role models in the community and lead by example. They understand that problems of any community cannot be solved single-handedly and requires the cooperation of all its members. They recognize the need to foster community pride and civic mindedness to help remove many of the societal ills making safety patrol necessary. This attitude runs throughout the multitude of community programs and services volunteers administer. The Guardian Angels recognize that by thinking solely in terms of protection instead of prevention we are throwing up the white flag and surrendering to the inevitability of crime.”
The world-renowned Guardian Angels was started by Curtis Sliwa in the Bronx on Feb. 13, 1979, with 13 kids. Today we have over 5000 members across 138 chapters in 13 countries!
We will hold our 43rd Anniversary at Angelicas Uptown restaurant at 808 West 187th Street in Washington Heights, NYC, from 12:00 PM – 3:30 PM EST, on Sunday, February 13th.
