On February 8, 2022, Sam Pirozzolo held a rally outside of Assemb. Mike Cusick’s office. This was in order to draw attention to the fact that many Staten Islanders are upset by the new redistricting maps that are currently being voted on (as well as contested in court).
Many Staten Island voters consider this gerrymandering and corruption. Considering the overall Conservative leaning of the island, enmeshing it with a larger and different part of Brooklyn instead of the small part of Brooklyn currently in its district, is likely to dilute the votes of the Island in a very big way.
Sam and his supporters are asking for these new maps to be rescinded, and for the current districts to remain in place. The old maps have been mostly fair, and are at least fair to the Island in terms of keeping political power in balance here, and within the actual wishes of the majority of islanders.
