NYC Organization of Public Service Retirees Calls on City Council to Hold Public Hearing on Int. 1099-2023

New York, NY – August 30, 2023 – The NYC Organization of Public Service Retirees (NYC Retirees) today called on the New York City Council’s Committee on Civil Service and Labor to hold a public hearing on Int. 1099-2023, the legislation protecting the earned Medicare benefits for municipal retirees.

“It is time for the City Council to take action and protect the health care of our retirees,” said Marianne Pizzitola, the President of NYC Retirees. “The Mayor’s plan to force retirees into a private Medicare Advantage plan is dangerous, as the State Supreme Court found. These plans have been known to deny coverage for essential care, and they can lead to higher out-of-pocket costs for seniors. We urge the City Council to hold a public hearing on Int. 1099-2023 so that our retirees can have their voices heard.”

The Mayor’s plan has been met with widespread opposition from retirees, labor unions, and healthcare experts.

“The Mayor’s plan is a clear attempt to privatize Medicare,” said Pizzitola. “This is a betrayal of our retirees, who have earned the right to quality, affordable health care. We will not stand for this attack on our benefits.”

NYC Retirees also called on the Mayor to stop organizing political ads with CVS/Aetna that feature the father of a city employee. These ads are misleading and deceptive, and they are designed to scare retirees into supporting the Mayor’s plan.

“The Mayor is using his office to spread misinformation about Medicare Advantage plans,” said Pizzitola. “These ads are a clear attempt to manipulate our retirees and get them to vote against their own interests. We demand that the Mayor stop these ads immediately.”

NYC Retirees also called on a select few city unions to stop helping the Mayor push his Medicare Advantage plan. These unions have stolen money from active workers’ health benefits, and they are now trying to use that money to enrich themselves in a Ponzi Scheme for the ages.

“These unions are putting their own financial interests ahead of the health care needs of our retirees. We demand that these unions stop helping the Mayor and start working to protect the benefits that our retirees have earned.”

NYC Retirees urge the City Council to hold a public hearing on Int. 1099-2023 and to vote to pass this legislation to protect the earned Medicare benefits for municipal retirees.

Marianne Pizzitola NYC Organization of Public Service Retirees

On August 13th, 2021, a group of retirees from many different city agencies got together to form an organization to fight the impending changes to our healthcare. Two and half hours later, five people volunteered to form the Board and one became an advisor to the Board. In the next few weeks, we grew to five officers, four Trustees, five Advisors, started our Facebook group, filed for NYS incorporation, opened our PayPal fundraising account and were approved by the State to conduct business. Six weeks later we met our initial fundraising goal to pay the attorney's retainer and had filed our article 78 petition. Our Facebook page has over 18,000 members and we have an email list of almost 10,000 and both continue to grow. This is a major accomplishment! But we need to grow larger. We need to reach 250,000 retirees!
